haptic feedback!

>Trackpads are the future

is this any good?

they were thinking about bbc

Great for 3D games
Not for 2D ones

Buck Breaking Cocks?

Playing FPS on a controller. In other words mental retardation.

>we're gonna make the best gamepad ever
and then they did

v2 when?

>How do we make the best controller ever

I'm still holding out hope for a steam deck controller

no, not at all, maybe for web browsing but even then it makes you wish they had implemented the same feature but with an actually good controller

If the game only requires one thumbstick it's good. But in general no

ITT: baby duck syndrome

huh? it's generally great.

it needs to be interchangeable, and have a more normal form factor, but it's actually great for a lot of stuff

Feels good in your hands, for a controller.
That's about it

it was bretty good

but a pad added on a controller seems a great idea. Why isn't this revolutionnary?

It's still my favourite controller and I also have the switch pro controller

No, not really. No pad-pad, the "left thumbstick" is too big and the actual thumbstick is in an awkward place. Same with the right side.

There's a reason they dropped it and the Steam controller API (smartly) now supports normal controllers no matter the console/manufacture.

>pic unrelated

>Why isn't this revolutionnary?

It is, the first edition of it just isn't that good, because it needs interchangeable parts. So the question is really if valve wnats to sell a $200 controller to enthusiasts in the future.

Great-
>Pads themselves
>Haptics
>Mouse emulation
>Chording, scripting, overlays etc

Bad-
>Buttons in wrong place
>Only one stick killed the controller, it's ideal for FPS but sucks for any third person action or anything like that
>No dpad available at all makes people interested in 2d games automatically disregard it even though they possibly shouldn't because the dpad emulation is good

The solution is for the controller to have like 8 modules, and allow you to swap them in and out. I believe there exists a commercial controller with this concept now already.

Water (Steam) in the brain.

They made a working peripheral.
I unironically use it while working when I'm tired of using my mouse and keyboard

>let us create the best controller ever
and then they made it

The idea is fine, but in practice it feels really awful to use. Zero tactile feedback if you're using the touch pads aside from some jiggling of the controller. And there are buttons under the pads, but it feels really bad to push them in.
I have one, and I bring it out at least once a year for a fair shake because I like how it feels in the hand. But it's really rare to play a game with it and not want a normal controller or the kb+m instead.

steam controller is unironically based. I use my all the time. Whether it's new vegas or system shock 2 or elden ring. version 2 when?

>Zero tactile feedback if you're using the touch pads aside from some jiggling of the controller.

This is inaccurate as fuck, because the haptics are genuinely amazing. Maybe you used a broken one.

>Buttons in wrong place
No, the trackpads are the star of the show and way more useful than some shitty face buttons. Those should be in the secondary position because the trackpad is primary
>only one stick
if you unironically want a right stick over using the trackpad for proper mouse-like aiming, there's zero point in you even wanting to use the SC in the first place. Use the fucking trackpad, holy shit. If anything they should also get rid of the left analogue stick too because trackpads work better for that too

Hardware's great. Software sucks. Configuring and fine-tuning for every game is tedious.

they wanted the consolfags audience

Compared to a real dpad or joystick? No, it feels like shit. It's slightly better than a laptop trackpad or a smartphone, but no one who plays games with those is worth taking seriously either.

I want both, hence my entire criticism of and solution for the device.

there's no reason to use a controller for FPS. I sit on the floor and use m+k on the coffee table

fixed

Literally no reason to use this instead of a mouse and keyboard, even if you're feeling lazy. Just don't be lazy.

It's not for you then. If you just want a normal controller where you just use sticks and buttons, use literally _any_other_controller_ available.

They were thinking of being known scammers who commit false advertising and fraud.

Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.

Feels great. I use a dual-trackpad setup and I just beat Malenia with a colossal weapon build using it.

I enjoyed the shit out of mine, and everyone else I know who bought one did as well. As a gamepad, it only worked in it's intended purpose well for a few select games, like Rocket League. But it's use as a long-range computer browser is unmatched. By far the /comfiest/ way I've ever found to do stuff on my computer was with the steam controller.

Now it's older, something shorted out to where it can now only be used if it's plugged in by USB, completely negating it's use as a long-range browser, the only ones for sale are upwards of $150. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Lol

To their credit they tried something different and new in a decade of standard 2 analog + 4 face button format that all 3 consoles have been doing. It just that it was too "foreign" for clients and expensive as fuck (Valve should've taken a loss per unit to help adoption)

Attached: alyx whoops.jpg (1050x1731, 343.36K)

just get a minikeyboard with a trackpad on it for like 25 bucks

They made the greatest controller and the masses rejected it because they are fucking retarded.

That's like saying a laptop is great because it makes a good paperweight

This. The shape of the trackpads and haptics are so comfy. Especially spinning the left trackpad for scrolling.

more product on shelves give more attention to your brand or something probably, especially at that time. theres always the chance some one asks "whats that thing" and boom they now know what steam is

>Hey let's try something different
>Surely they're will appreciate that this is at least a little bit new from what they've been using for decades.

you can't hold a controller like this, you'll feel like your wrists are being twisted in a vise.

Yes I know I own switch
but honestly steam deck has top 3 controls and customization just make it controller shape and you have the best controller

they were thinking
>we are smarter and better than all other game controller designers
and they were right.

I like mine a lot but I got it for 5 bucks worth of steam trading cards. I'll never use a normal controller again, any controller without back paddles is lesser. If they made a steam controller v2 with modular dinner plates so you could replace one with a normal stick or a sega ssaturn d pad it would be the perfect controller for any game, currently it's only good for certain kinds of games.

>I'll never use a normal controller again
Same honestly. I do not want to ever go back.

No, it's a piece of shit. Thankfully I got it for when Steam was unloading all unsold Steam Controllers for $5

Keep it for a couple years and it could sell as a novelty

It's built for couch FPSes and couch Civ.

Its absolutely perfect for third person stuff. There is no better way to play The Witcher games or Dark Souls.

based thoughts of
>"how about we make something better than total garbage Xbox controllers"
and then they did it
yes
me too,i never want to use "normal" controllers again.
