Get to level 5 fishing on the second day. Upgrade the pickaxe on the third. Then fish, mine, fish and mine in order to unlock the skullcave mid spring. From there on you farm mad amounts of iridium. On the first day of summer plant tons of starfruit. After that it's more of the same.

Ingredient quality has no effect on cooking. Make sure to check out the community center when it opens up to you so you know what you must hoard/find. Also keep in mind that you can't fuck yourself permanently, the biggest trap for most new players is that they need a fish that spawns two seasons away in order to complete a bundle for the community center. Make sure to forage for free shit.

Thankfully the traveling cart takes care of that. Never had to fish in the desert.

The only cooking item that matters is pepper poppers, and crab cakes since those give a speed boost too and lasts longer but is harder to make which is why you should save money for when you do that event with Willy were he breeds a lot of crabs so Gus sells them at his saloon for a couple of days.

Triple shot espresso is far an away easier to make than either of those making it the better source of speed. It's only problem is you need a different food for healing.

Not unless you use a mod like the cooking skill or the love of cooking.

The desert provides endless triple shots and spicy eel.
