I just don't understand this one thing, someone genuinely explain this to me.

What is the point of playing a long-term service game where any kind of powerful items or prestige is all eventually obsoleted on a routine basis? It doesn't matter if you had spent 200 hours grinding to get the absolute top-of-the-line gear in Shadowbringers, because the next expansion just resets the table and puts everyone on the same footing chasing an even higher tier of stuff. If you are going to spend literal years of your life collecting virtual stuff then aren't you bothered that it becomes meaningless every new expansion release like clockwork?

Yes. You’ll still use it between fights, during phase transitions and later when you get Umbral Soul (and your BLM becomes 10x more playable) to ensure you’re in Ice stance

They’ll bury you with a headstone marked with your true class, and every passerby for the rest of eternity will know a lancer is buried there. Your body will decay and go back to the dust, and all that will remain of your legacy is a skeleton that is unmistakably a lancer.

14 has the smallest great progression of any MMO I’ve played, it’s absolutely not gear based, and the gear is easy/quick to get regardless.

Gear is just a key for opening up doors to new content to play with, and the real endgame is fashion anyway so all that gear still has a use later

Some see it as a grand goal, while others just do it to help pass the time either in small or large doses over those long periods of time.

It's a matter of perspective. But its like this for majority of MMO's, new expansion comes out previous stuff becomes eventually useless other then for looks.

To some its more about the journey, I still have vivid memory when I cleared Susano Extreme for the first time and even though that Axe was eventually replaced, I still look back on that fight fondly still.

TPS clears content absurdly fast, to the point where people question the validity of their wins. They cleared TEA in 3 days for example, only for world 2nd to happen nearly 2 days after theirs.

Viera are okay, but not as good as Au Ra or Miqo’te.

They're already confirmed cheaters in TEA. It's not even debatable. We can't move waymarks in battle anymore as a result of it.

Playing for numbers/loot made sense back when there was gear that actually changed things.

In WoW Vanilla you’d have trinkets, potions, items and set pieces that did all kinds of crazy things right down to fundamentally changing how your class would play. Over time they got rid of that- it was a balancing nightmare and made PvP even harder to balance, but it was very interesting.

I don’t know if FF14 ever had that, I didn’t play ARR or HW, but it definitely doesn’t anymore. Every piece of gear is just a linear progression from the previous piece, there’s nothing fundamentally interesting about it beyond hitting enough secondary stats to meet some breakpoint or another. It’s still satisfying in the way that all slow accumulations of power are satisfying- but I would be shocked if that was part of the fundamental excitement of high end raiding for very many people. Not in the way we used to have people backstabbing each other and playing endless guild politics to get their hands on a Lifegiving Gem, at least.

You do realize that people have to see the mechanics to program cactbot callouts right? Meaning that TPS would have to take time to solve the mechanic and then take more time to actually write the cactbot callouts instead of, you know, actually progging.

What am I saying though, of course you wouldnt know that. You havent even cleared a savage fight week one. You just wait until everyone solves the fights for you then load up your cactbot and xiv combo and proceed to gray parse.

I don't think it ever did in a way. Maybe relic weapon in each expansion, but for me it's all about the glam game. I could give rat's ass about the marginal increase to the numbers I do. I clear weekly raids to upgrade, but gearing up is so goddamn simple that it doesn't feel like a chore to me.

There was a time that during ARR and HW certain things did matter, hell Heavensward Alexander Raids set a mindset that is still present today because of how those raids were early on. Over time that did change for one reason or another.

The game is designed in a way to be something to relax to and enjoy the story, there are grander goals for you as a player to reach for if you so wanted to, no one is forcing anyone to do them other then "Do you want X?" and that can be anything you find interesting, could be the raid scene, could be capitalizing on the market, or just fishing.

For the user who asked me last night to make pics of alisaie bullying my WoL, I'm sorry I failed you. Alisaie was made to be bullied so it doesn't work.
