I've played pretty much every indie, AA and AAA Metroidvania. It's my favourite genre.
Please recommend some I may not have heard of, or some obscure ones that you liked.
Also, what games in the genre are coming out that you're excited about?

hollow knight is a reddit game
How did a reddit game end up being better than every other Metroidvania game?
how anyone can unironically believe this Tumblr art game woth forgettable music is the hest metroidvania just proves this place has been invaded by reddit.
Did some garbage e-celeb make a video about Hollow Knight recently? Game used to be loved here
Yea Forums is a Reddit site
Metroidvania as a genre is shit. Metroid and igavania games tower over every indie derivative in existence. I say this as a massive fan of both of those sites, nothing comes close except maybe Bloodstained but it's kinda ugly.
I really did not think Bloodstained was anything special. There have been so many indie Metroidvanias that stand out more than that.
a few weeks ago I tried for about the 7th time to enjoy Super Metroid, and I still dislike it
I've tried it unmodded and modded with better controls, the last time was unmodded and I got further than previous attempts but I can't stand it, it controls poorly, the combat is atrocious, it's quite ugly and the sound is noticeably low quality, plus the map is missing a ton of QoL features found in later genre games
as for upcoming metroidvanias:
>Moadra
>Islets
>Ghost Song
>Souldiers
>Castle in the Darkness 2
>Being and Becoming
>Environmental Station Alpha 2
>The Siege and the Sandfox
Moadra looks the best to me out of all those
youtu.be
Not obscure but some good metroidvanias that aren't from the big names
>Blasphemous
>Ender Lillies
>Sundred
>Gato Roboto
>Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
I don't know of any metroidvanias coming out soon, but I've only played a couple Castlevanias so that'll take up my time for now
It's from shitposting around the time Dread came out, it was extremely obnoxious. Basically made HK shitpost bait
I never understood the point of these threads. There is at the very best only 4 *proper* metroidvania games and this includes the original genre creator SoTN. The rest is pathetic trash with lazy effort of lazy devs who failed to properly grasp the concept and ultimately made a pale, creatively-dead imitations.
What's to discuss?
deedlit's game is pretty good if you haven't tried it
Adding to this list with two more I'm aware of
> The Last Faith
> Savior
>aquaria 2 never ever
hollow knight looks like a funko pop so the game is ruined
I have not, adding it to my wishlist now. Thanks user.
it's also extremely short
forgot to mention, Momodora: Moonlit Farewell
>it controls poorly
Another smoothbrain filtered
Grime was pretty good, didn't really gat the feel for salt and sanctuary but it looked good as well.
>igavania games tower over every indie derivative in existence
not HK
I'm waiting for the Switch launch for this one!
Just can't stand 2D games. I feel so restrained and limited that I always end up abandoning the game. I couldn't get past 3 hours of Hollow Knight, I couldn't deal with Metroid Fusion, I don't even know how did I finish Celeste, although that one was a platformer. Only some 2D games do it for me, like This War of Mine, I guess it was the management and building aspect that kept me going. Will I enjoy Metroid Dread or I shouldn't even bother? Was thinking to set up whatever Switch emulator there is but I don't know anymore.
Probably not, seems like the genre just isn't for you
>management
Try Lobotomy Corp
Metroid Dread is pretty exceptional. Really tight, fluid, fast paced. the EMMI sections do mess with the flow/pacing at times, but the rest of the game is sublime.
I'm a Metroid fan though.
Have you played environmental station alpha?
>Metroid Dread is pretty exceptional
bullshit.
Dread is great.
this thread again? fuck off stupid retard bot shill garbage cockmunching inbred tiny dick shithole pooplord
The original resident evil
I liked You's island express a lot, I played through it 100% twice.
>its exceptional
>because i like it
brainlet
its good, noting more
Fpbp
the leveling system and light RPG elements in igavanias automatically make them garbage
I'm a Zoomer who just bought two Castlevania collection without ever playing a single one before. Anything I should know before calling the games bullshit because of my own lack of skill?
>it's quite ugly
No it's not. Play it on a real snes on a crt tv and it will look amazing. 8 and 16 bit games were not designed to be displayed with huge pixels on 4K displays, of course it will look ugly if you do that, any game from that era will.
you have no argument.
>recently
it's been a meme to shit on HK for like 3+ years now
The Metroidvania genre is super fucking overrated, just like the games they're based on.
Okay, I like it though. :)
Moadra looks like such an obvious metroid ripoff, I know it's called metroidvania but holy shit at least try doing something original, it cannot get more blatant than that
are you capable of criticizing anything without having to resort to that meaningless buzzword?
>Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
>look it up
>actually exists
wtf it sounds like a porn title
Did anyone play A Robot Named Fight? It's a roguelike at heart, but the fact that each run is a self contained Metroidvania that changes based on what powerups are available in the run was neat.
Ender Lilies
what about top-down 2D ones like Hyper Light Drifter and LttP?
Currently playing this on Switch! Took a minute to click, but having fun.
How the fuck can you think SM looks ugly? Also, SM does a lot of things well that most other games don't.
>Exploration
While there are only a handful of reward types in the game, exploration makes use of your tools which is fun in itself
>Meaningful and sometimes very unique upgrades
The way SM handles upgrades is great, you either get a completely new move to add to your toolset or you can an upgrade to something you already had. Nearly every ability you get has multiple uses and is almost always useful throughout the entire game
>Movement abilities
What SM lacks in combat it makes up for in movement tech. Your movement options give you so many interesting and skillful ways to approach situations
>Level design
Kind of coming off my previous point. The level design is just solid all around but the way levels are made mixed in with all of the movement tech makes the game approachable from multiple ways and can lead to a lot of satisfying, skillful ways to skip certain content or get to certain abilities early.
Exiles End is a fun little metroidvaina you probably haven’t played. Its a passion project of someone who wanted to remake what a gaming experience on Amiga was like. I think the music composer is the same guy who made the tracks for ninja gaiden for nes. Its nothing mind blowing but it does have a really nice feel to it for around two playthroughs.
valdis story
You'll probably find a couple porn doujins, it's a popular nip series of LNs. How it got turned into a game I got no clue
>it's quite ugly and the sound is noticeably low quality, plus the map is missing a ton of QoL features found in later genre games
You can blame that one on all the disgusting creatures that claimed that HK exploration and map system was good, seriously.
ur taste in games is shite and i resent your kind, worse than story/film corrupting vidya
Its a tragic mini genre.
>you have no argument
But he said that and music are shit?
What the fuck are you even talking about?
They weren't Light Novels you fucking moefag millennial, Japanese players would make "play reports" out of their Dungeons and Dragons Campaigns and Record of Lodoss War was the most popular one.
Now get off my lawn
I liked lost ruins, can setup a lot of playstyles and its kinda fun and memey
I liked this one to and I played it back in 2014
>2 playable characters on release and more to come!
did they ever add them?
Yeah, it's good and the artstyle is great. Too bad the physical version doesn't come with an art book.
look how powerful that word is
powerful enough to make you reply and seethe
>did they ever add them?
yeah I remember they added 1 or 2 new ones in 2015 or 16 but it was also long after I completed it so I never really tested them
I wouldn't say Lost Ruins is a metroidvania, you don't really get new abilities along the way and it's rather linear. Even so it's really fun and it has lots of optional modes
Nigga what the hell are YOU talking about, everyone knows how bad the map system in HK is!
>Metroid
>Metroidvania
the fuck
