Every ace combat game (except the JP version of 3 because it gets kinda weird) revolves around a faceless, mysterious fighter pilot who becomes a folk tale hero shortly before vanishing off the face of the Earth forever. Everyone sucks your dick constantly, you get likeable characters, bros, rivals, villains, sometimes all four in one character. Most of the stories take place in an alternate Earth and the missions range from reenacting D-Day on Omaha to secret photo ops and zigzagging inbetween radars to blowing up superpowered railguns that were once used to blow up world-ending asteroids to trying to prevent a not entirely unjustified nuclear holocaust by fighting your best friend. It's great.

Mostly arcade dogfights and ground bombardments with bossfights and gimmick missions on top.

Yes. 7 is still very nice, should be cool for a newcomer. Note that you can easily emulate those on PS2. Bet those on PS1 and PSP are even easier to emulate.
My personal ranking from those I've played is 0 > 5 > X > 7 > 4.
Also, Project Wingman is a very nice modern Ace Combat clone. Check it out if you like that kind of game. You get a crazy girl as your copilot if you fly a two-seater in that one.

Holy shit thanks for letting me know OP, I have been waiting for a good sale for a while. Finally I get to play it, the pirated edition is huge and repacks arent good at compressing at all since unpacking takes fucking years and usually crash before finishing

I got it on xbox some time ago for less than $5 and I couldn't force myself to finish it because I'm getting dizzy while playing
Really hope that emulation will get better at some point so I can finally finish it

I fucking love this game. I don't like that there are several planes behind dlc but I bought em all anyways on sale for like 3 bucks each. My only complaint is the campaign is rather short, with the best missions being the three DLC. Multiplayer is also extremely barebones but still fun, mostly. Gud game, 8/10.

I played the game, but got sick of the story after 10 missions. You basically just play as a UN pilot taking down Russia.
