interesting thing i noticed in the PS4 SDK is you could set PS4 games to check for the presence of certain PS3 game discs being inserted, like the upgrade system they only debuted this gen for PS5 games. this was never officially used as far as i know.

Considering Jimmy Ryan is aggressively against playing old games I expect this to be another "PS2 Classics" situation. They'll do it as long as they can sell you something at the end of it, I doubt you'll get any kind of emulation for free.

They are going to selectively choose what games are available, no "problematic" games will be emulatable.

A bluray laser can read CDs no problem, as well as DVD lasers, Sony has just been stingy and won't pay the CD licensing board (who they themselves are a part of) the licensing fee that is required to implement it.
