I didn't expect a newer ability to weasel itself into a top spot so quickly but Ranger is just really fucking fun to use at every stage and they use it in stage puzzles really damn well.

In concept Ranger is pretty much Archer in 3D, but the counter rapid shot makes it really fun

Super Star is usually the first recommendation people give, but Star Allies is derivating a lot from Super Stars story progression and level ideas.
Robobot is a must play if you want more of the same gameplay style of Star Allies
I'd say give the Dark Matter games a shot though since they are a different flavour of Kirby games. They are all about having simple abilities, but having different variations to play around with trough animal friends or combinations in 64.
They would be: Dreamland 2, Dreamland 3 and Kirby 64.

It's one of the few Kirby games I haven't played yet, but I'm big into my DS/3DS lately so I'll probably cycle around to it soon. Canvas Curse is just so full of content that it's been taking up all my DS time.

Squeak Squad was actually the very first Kirby game i owned for myself.
After all, i'm glad it was my first, since it might be simple, but it's very polished.
You should definitely give Amazing Mirror a go, it's the closest to Squeak Squad

It's simple and fun, nice things to collect and the Squeaks are fun to fight. There's also a nice amount of abilities, tornado is busted.

I know about Amazing Mirror, I may play it one day. Squeak Squad is definitely one of the better Kirby games to start with.
