I really like it but I have to agree that air acceleration is way too unrestricted, the momentum feels all over the place.
That being said I enjoy the game the most rocket jumping through stages as Doomguy, with parameters to mimic TF2s rocket jumping.
I highly recommend the Duke Nukem mod

Go into controller configuration and select simple mode with a gamepad, the game and it's camera was designed to be played with a mouse and keyboard but that shit feels off to me. Simple mode and binding the camera to triggers works just as well.
That's actually what I did. Tried mouse and keyboard first and that wasn't working for me. Switched to controller and simple mode worked wonders.

Literally the best 3D Sonic game, consider yourself filtered. Best game I've played in years.
Can't help you but what I do when playing is that I have L and R set to turn the character with the camera always fixed behind the character. This means I more 'steer' the character but it works very well and I have had no trouble playing several challenging map packs and even some speedrunning with that control scheme.
Honestly though everyone is different, almost everyone seems to have a wildly different control scheme for SRB2.
It's been a while, I took someone elses Tailsguy pk3 and modified the files myself so that you take less damage from rocket jumping and increased the vertical height on jumps, along with a few other things I can't remember. It lead to a much more fun to use doomguy for platforming. I still have the file somewhere if you want to mess around with it.

God I really love this game, but the level making scene is dead. It is a shame because the level competitions are so fun but those are the only big things that ever seem to drop.
They're too retarded for SRB2 in general apparently. There's all sorts of customization settings available for the camera and controls, yet some people will still write the game off based on the base settings for each. Their loss.
I just figured most map makers started save their stuff for the different map collabs instead of releasing them as standalone levels.

Did you even bother looking in the options? There's all sorts of settings for camera distance, rotation speed, whether it should follow the direction you're heading in automatically, etc.
this and its kart mod are somehow among the last few kind of alive games left with dedicated servers and I genuinely hope everyone who plays them enjoys it while it lasts
I check in every few months and find something cool to play usually. And as you say the official level collabs are consistently great.

Used to be the 3D models but that's long since been added. Depends on what you personally like and want out of a sonic game.
Playing SRB2 with a keyboard as a kid is legitimately the only reason I had no trouble picking up keyboard movement in Doom 1 and 2.

well, personally I'd install half of the levels/character addons forum section, but the only mandatory ones imo is sloperoll angle (makes your character tilt on slopes) and xmomentum (makes srb2 flow better). I'd do a playthrough before installing xmomentum though
Do a vanilla run first as Sonic using the uncapped mod to let it go over 30FPS. I recommend also turning on models in the opengl settings.
Once you have beat the game vanilla go wild, there are loads of good downloadable characters that radically alter the experience.
