It really is an unnecessary "hobby" and I've made some stupid purchases, but there are some I'm really happy with.
Honestly, don't buy the cheap ones. You'll just end up buying a shit ton of them and being happy with none. Just buy really well made and expensive ones like once and year for your birthday or something. You'll have a nicer collection and you probably won't regret it for your really passionate about the merch you got.

i wouldn't suggest getting into it, i'm in over like 20 grand easily, overall. just started buying figures from amiami since like 2010. i keep it clean by putting figures in dust-tight display cabinets. They're really just ikea bookcases + morliden doors, but i bought extra off-the-shelf hardware like weather stripping of specific thicknesses to wrap around the bookcase to keep it sealed.

i also like collecting artbooks when possible too. Along with CDs, figures, posters, etc. Basically collecting anything but the game itself, because who cares when it's just a ROM file in a plastic cartridge. an everdrive has been the superior way to play the game for years, assuming you're fickle and don't like pc emulation.
