But the game is more than beatable without maxing out everything

there's always a few tryhards that pick the hardest difficulty no matter what. super expert plus is something else though, i guess BB studio finally got tired of all the people making fun of how easy the game is. it's still not the hardest srw since it doesn't have SR points but it's up there in difficulty imo.

What is a 'normal' difficulty that will be reasonable but not too bad for a first playthrough? I'm always wary of these games because in Three Houses for example 'normal' mode was made for retards and basically played itself.

Normal and beginner have the same level of difficulty while the latter gives you bonus credits every mission. So those two are similar as your example.
Then again lots of people play SRW to see their favorite mechs wreck the shit out of the enemy

You play normal f you dont plan to play any of the extra and DLC missions or get the bonus items. The game is too generous in funds and you'll find yourself breezing trough it faster as the game progresses. The harder modes may pose a problem early on but once you get your warchest going its just as easy.
mainline SRW hasnt had a semblance of challenge since... Z1 on the PS2 I think? or at least A portable

It's not like there's that many girl focused mecha series, last time we got Cross Ange 2 games in a row and that's a love it or hate it anime.
The space start gives you the bunnies and the shriek team though, so that's a fair ammount of women.
