As for which games to play, I'd suggest 4 next since it's the easiest to play, then 3 (needs to be emulated with a mostly-complete fan translation patch), then 2 (which isn't terrible but is clearly the runt of the series. Better to play it after 3 since 3 is the overall better game, but one of its flaws is that it recycles some maps from 2).

1, 3, and 4 all take more or less concurrently in different parts of the wars and 2 takes place later in a different war altogether, so the order doesn't matter other than VC1 being the best introduction.

I was surprised that she was even slightly plot relevant in 4 and got another dlc. I like her and all, and it makes sense if people like Jaeger reappear and talk about her, but I don't want her to be a requirement in future games outside of dlc because I can ignore that; just like edy.
