It's basically impossible to convey just what a HUGE deal the Sims for players back in the day. We saw the birth of something brand new that wasn't a city builder, real time tactics or a management game. It was a weird amalgam with simulation at its core.

I played it a couple years ago for a very brief time. It has horrible controls once you've been exposed to modern control schemes. For that fact alone I found it unplayable. It was fine at the time, but I couldn't handle it now.
Can post an entire 7 hour playthrough while you stay in your small studio set of a downgrade game

The playable areas are bigger than that, mate.
Sure they're not as big as 3's empty, buggy ass maps, but it's a good compromise for stability.

Yeah I know most say sims 2 was the best but fuck them, fix the constant motive drain and 1 beats any of the others hands down. Also:

Anyone who actually wants to try and make 3 look good can if they set it up properly. I didn't even touch this girl, she's randomly generated and is still using basegame hair. It's all just my default mods and reshade.

Made in the 90s, backed by a singular madman designer with a really strong and unique vision, developed by a team that were working against a lot of outside pressure and doubt and EA, released at just the right time in early 2000 when it was still completely unique in its field but not considered graphically or mechanically out of date yet. Also an incredible sense of style, a biting satire to its text that was almost half-accidental and a killer soundtrack. Basically a perfect storm of variables.
