Basically people who took someone else's code and added extra shit to it. Can be anything from trojans and cryptominers to a bunch of bugfixes or new content.

Without getting into the weeds of things a fork allows you to make a copy of code where you can then add your own changes into it. Forking is not necessary to make a copy or download the code, and is mostly useless unless you plan on doing your own development to the code you are forking.

In that case, I will continue to lurk its Discord. With any luck, even if it takes a while, it'll function well with all of the basic features. Maybe this project will live out the lifespan of the game, or will spawn similar projects built on it as well, being the means by which we'll be playing Genshin when it's dead.

Genshin is a single-player game (with optional co-op functions), but it all plays off of a server, to determine things like reset timers, transactions for the gacha, events, etc. So to play the game while cutting the company who operates it out of the picture, you would indeed have to run a private server.
