Why is this game hated again?

Because famous youtuber said so

like team sonic
like team dark
like team chaotix
'ate team rose
simply put.

But seriously, SA2 was the first character action game

15 years later and I still want my money back

Because it's not fun to control.
>Verification not required.

it is though

>repetitive gameplay
>janky collision
>characters are hard to control
>chaos emeralds aren't fun
>have to beat it 4 times to unlock the final boss
Disappointing on many levels, it could and should have been good but they were afraid of putting out a short game.

Because I played the game and didn't enjoy it.

Team Rose's stages are too short, but they at least cut out a lot of the bullshit like the bingo tables.

>60 fps
On what fucking system, it ran at 30 fps on GameCube at best times and the multiplayer mode infamously ran at a hilarious 10 fps on all four platforms
> character action
This is the single most zoomiest term ever fucking made and I can confirm the age of any child who fucking uses it
>on the go style switching
Bloodrayne

Just checked to be certain, and sure enough, Sonic Heroes was released more than two years after Devil May Cry 1. Your move.

the only reason team rose exists is to cheese getting the emeralds, and that's just blahhh

why is there a sonic heroes thread up every day now? some eceleb im guessing?

more like 6fps

Because it's shit and the characters don't shut up.
Source: Me. 72 hours gameplay and all A-Ranks. Expert mode cleared on GameCube.

Music is some of the best in the series though.

Because it's not good.

The levels have constant forced combat sections when the combat isn't fun, and similarly forced progression blockers with keycards and shit, both completely kill your flow state which is one thing that every other sonic game, 2d, and 3d, had done well before

It was 60fps on GameCube, Xbox and PC. 30fps on PS2.

Manipulating the team upgrades and mastering the character switch mechanic to get the right ones for the forced combat sections made me realize this game has more depth than some of the actual character action games that came out at the time. Being good enough to figure out how to skip some of them feels good too.

Why are you arguing this hard against a joke

A)Shit levels
B)Gotta beat 4 routes of the same shit except one is pig shit
Shit spammed combat.
If I replay it, it will be with a downloaded 100% save for Team Dark and Last Story.

>It was 60fps on GameCube, Xbox and PC. 30fps on PS2.
Spoken like a true zoomer who never actually played Sonic Heroes on any four systems.

What's wrong with character action? It's a good way to describe games like DMC where the action is focused on the movement of a single character.

>famous youtuber
I can't help but feel like this is a significant degree of projection every time it comes up. Drop this line and you straight up can't even defend the game without moving your goalposts unless someone outright says
>I hate X because zerpideeberdibloo

Do you people never consider that if someone can demonstrate that they've played the game then you've instantly made yourself irrelevant to any real conversation?

Attached: NWF Sonic.jpg (750x739, 184.56K)

Not him, and I don't know exactly the FPS so you are probably correct about the 30 part; but I have played on all of the systems and I know for a fact that the PS2 version is complete dogshit in comparison to the others.

Character control is slippery.
Flight/Power segments aren't fun.

But most of all the level design is shit.
Many levels repeat the same set-piece with barely any variation on the 2nd appearance, most levels could be halved in length as a result without losing anything.
And you have to play these levels 3 times + One with fucking objectives

They have always been known as Beat 'Em Ups, Hack 'N Slashes, or Stylish Action games, even officially by Capcom in the Xbox 360 store.
"Character action" is a faggot zoomer term made by some YouTuber that literal children follow in his confusion to describe Devil May Cry. It truly is a blatant testament of a person's character when he uses, "character action" at all. You would fucking know this if you weren't a zoomer yourself, kiddo.

GameCube runs best
Xbox and PC are about equal
PS2 is worst
But they don't fucking reach 60 and 30 frames respectively by any means, this is retarded bullshit spouted by a faggot who doesn't know what framerates even are and memes whatever numbers he's heard before.
The multiplayer on all four versions runs at 10-12 fps. Which is like fucking slow motion molasses.

>mastering the character switch mechanic to get the right ones for the forced combat sections
There are only three characters.

>Manipulating Mario in Super Mario 64 to do the coveted triple jump and landing on your enemy. Being good enough to figure out how to run past some of them feels good too.

>zoomer defends his character action lingo
lmfao

GC is rock solid 60 dumbass

There are several "mandatory" combat sections that can be entirely circumvented if you are good enough at the platforming. Like the first Egg Fleet combat section can be avoided by jumping around the side and hovering as tails if you're moving fast enough.

Was it really created by a YouTuber? If so, I can safely discard it, even if it has some utility in describing those kinds of games. I don't want to engage in that no matter what.
Also, it's pretty obvious that you're a follower of these youtube channels trying to distance himself from them with his newfound Yea Forums boomer old school identity or whatever that you picked up a few months ago, indicated by how hard you're trying and the fact that you were even aware of the origin of this term.

>Can't even spell GCN correctly
>Infuriously insists it runs at 60 fps despite the GCN itself being clocked at 24 fps
lmfao
lmfao forever
Keep diarrhea shitting bullshit made up from your asshole, you impotent child.

Speaking of 30fps, is 30fps but at 4k playable or not?

>despite the GCN itself being clocked at 24 fps
Are you fucking retarded?

You sonyfags are such fucking defensive retards
Literally every version except the ps2 version was 60

Okay so what game invented good 60fps character action with on the go style switching

I blame it on the ranking system and tutorial not properly showing what's possible. The A rank is so generous that I can easily see people just mindlessly mashing against whatever set of enemies they see, still get an A rank, and just continue on throughout the entire game like that, never changing or experimenting cause the game really doesn't ask them to. So they eventually come to the conclusion that the game's some pacebreaky mashy garbage.

The jank and terrible polish does it no favors either.

Because it's shit. But we've reached the timeframe where zoomers are rabidly defending every shit game they played as kids to be contrarian and protect their memories so I guess you want to jump on that train.

It's this weird cycle of everyone parroting each other to fit in.
>hurr durr same game four times
>but playing as Big in SA1 was super fun
>hurr durr bad controls
>even though it's better than most modern Sonics
>hurr durr combat and awkward changing
>but if you get good at it it's smooth and well paced, just like classic Sonic
It's one of the most underrated games of all time, right up there with Mario Sunshine and Majora's Mask. It's like the modern equivalent of "why does every second NES game suck?" except it's baseless.

>chaos emeralds aren't fun
Oh come on. Switching modes on the fly, moving faster and faster when you're doing well, having the whole pipe to navigate in, they're almost as good as Genesis Sonic 2, except for fucking up being too punishing.

>parrot YouTuber
>I am le smart

>point out you're parroting YouTuber
>MAKE YOUR OWN ARGUMENT

Levels are too long. If you try to switch rails while grinding you better pray you don't fall to your death, same with using power form near a ledge. Tails's voice actor. The different stories are too similar. Everything about Team Rose. Knuckles is there for no reason. No chao garden or minigames = downgrade from Sonic Adventure 2. Tries to be a sequel to the Adventure games while being light on story and being tonally different. Cheesy dialogue.

the game is funny but the ps2 version is soooo shitty

>having to play the game 4 times just to get the real ending
>some enemies have way too much health (some teams have to fight those constantly)
>bit on the slippery side
>some levels are way too long
>Chaotix missions are AIDS half the time
I think the game is somewhat decent overall, but that's the basic gist.

Because Yea Forums schizos hate sonic and never played his games

Not him, but "character action" is a fucking nonsense genre that doesn't exist. Nobody can even agree on what it is. DMC is considered character action, but the original GoW trilogy isn't even considered to be in that category for some strange reason (despite it having a lot of similarities to DMC). The term for them should just be "action games."

No, GC definitely hits 60. You are talking out of your ass. Not always able to stay up there, but it will 60 a lot of the time.

Hyper disappointing follow up to the Adventure series on all fronts
>Bad story even on terms of Sonic games
>shadows semi meaningful death is retconned
>Shitty art style and renderware engine graphics because it made it easy to port across all systems
>God awful bloated level design that requires you to beat the game 4 times with minimal variation just to play through each characters "story"
>enemies have health bars
>bugs everywhere
>absolutely useless ranking system that gutted all the unlockables from the SA games
The idea of streamlining the styles from Adventure 2 even more is novel but overall this game is the absolute peak example of why Sonic Team is just bad at 3D Sonic
The Adventure games are by no means perfect and do show their age but you could have kept polishing up what they were doing in Adventure 2 at least once or twice more and gotten a real decent gem at the end, but instead you kept getting all these bad attempts at "something new" for the sake of it
This was absolutely disappointing to me back when I was 13 and it came out and it's still one of my most disliked games to this day

>>having to play the game 4 times just to get the real ending
I honestly get what they were going for
Sonic was normal
Dark was hard
Rose was easy
Chaotix was mission
But they really shouldn't have made you go through it 4 times. Just make, that shit optional to unlock super hard or something.

>Shitty art style and renderware engine graphics because it made it easy to port across all systems
What? I think Heroes looks great. If any game looks shitty, it's the one that came out after Heroes.

Attached: Casino Park.gif (500x500, 2.36M)

i had this as a kid and have been wantimg to retry it is the pc version good enough to play?

Yeah, exactly. Each team should just be a difficulty that you play that unlocks the last segment of the story.

>If any game looks shitty, it's the one using the same engine as Heroes

That idea was fine but literally making you play each level 4 times was ass
If each team had their own level sets that would have been much more interesting
Because instead what you listed boils down to
>Sonic was average length
>Dark was holy fuck when do these stages end why does spending 10 minutes in a level still get me an A Rank
>Rose was short but fun
>Chaotix was wow these stages were not built for exploration
People like to dunk on the shooter and treasure hunt stages in SA2 but at least those were all designed around their core ideas

>bad story
how the fuck is Heroes' story bad??? It's just simple compared to SA1 and SA2

>Switching modes on the fly
There's zero reason to switch from power characters

Lmao this The engine it runs in just looks bad and has this awful plastic sheen to it
The casino level is probably the brightest and most colorful (as it should be) but the further you go (Rail Canyon, Hang Castle etc) it just gets uglier and more washed out

it pales in comparison to exclusives like monkey ball or f-zero gx
and there's barely any fancy shaders at all
the playstation 2 was a mistake
that plastic sheen was a deliberate effect. they authored a special texture to make it look exactly how they wanted (LOL)

Because even as a child I realized this game was a boring slog, playing adventure 1 and 2 was amazing. Heros only has like 4 good music tracks and nostalgia to its namesake.

I'm not going to get into semantics about stories in Sonic games, story shouldn't have to be a major or high quality focus in Sonic
but after the fun little bits to follow along with in the Adventure games Heroes was such a let down, and the game uses plot bits and points from the Adventure games, so you cant just say it was starting fresh
Its so disjointed and tonally different
>Sonic is literally just fighting robotnik again, whatever fine
>amy and friends are looking for froggy and the Chao but because they are related to Chaos from SA1 the weird T1000 Metal Sonic wants their DNA
>chaotix was all a prank because they're idiots but serious stuff still happens
>Shadow IS ALIVE DESPITE BEING DEAD AT THE END OF SA2 and also his DNA is needed for Metal Sonic??
It's bad

You can shit on the gameplay all you want but the music was top notch. The only shit mid tracks were Lost Jungle and Hang Castle

The only positive things I can say about Heroes are that half of the levels are iconic and This Machine and What I'm Made Of are certified bangers

That's disingenuous. SFV and DBFZ use the same engine, but they look drastically different.

Which one?
