you either play the original unmodded (or maybe with some graphical mods) or play the original with perfected doom 3 mod. the reason you dont play bfg is because the flash light attachment really butchers the atmosphere of the game without adding anything extra, in fact taking things away (game pauses when you quicksave and looks worse in places)
perfected doom 3 also adds a flash light attachment but also overall improves the game a ton and makes it more action than horror

I didn't say anything about the city levels and don't mind the city levels that much. There's just not a stretch of levels as well-made as Knee Deep in the Dead in Doom 2. Hell, episode 2 is better than most levels in Doom 2.

Yeah the problem is that the way the devs intended you to use it was literally getting close enough that you're touching the enemy before shooting them. And even then sometimes all the pellets don't connect. Not fun at all. At least most of the other weapons are fun to use in D3 though.

My headcanon is the devs were afraid of repeating it being imbalanced like Doom 2 SSG so they made it just as powerful but only in melee range
