The symbols are "batsu" (X) and "maru" (O) which are used in japan to represent no and yes rather than the english letters "X" and "O" so technically it's the batsu button not the X button. Which is especially fucked when you consider that by switching the functionality of X and O for western playstation consoles the no button is for confirming and the yes button is used to go back or cancel

X is generally mapped to fire mode for fps games

The x is always silent when you're using the "a x b" format in Japanese. It's the same with pairings, "Naruto X Sakura" reads "Naruto Sakura" or "NaruSaku"

I'm in agreement with the Snoys in saying that Nintendo's button placement is fucking retarded.

Nintendo and Sony have the same button placement. The functions of ○ and × are swapped on western consoles because red is no and X is kinda like a check mark.
