It's probably for gameplay purposes so that you can tell which characters use what classes. I would have preferred that they made personalized class outfits for everyone but I can also just not use it and keep everyone in their base classes so I won't complain

I am really hoping this is hinting that more classes can be unlocked the further you progress.

Only having six classes seems pointless when each character could just maintain fixed roles.

I like that this class clothing swapping feature exists, because it basically spells out the whole reason 3's main character designs might seem more basic to some in comparison to 2's. Such overly elaborate specific outfits just wouldn't be flexible enough to convey a combat class, or be shared by potentially the entire party.
