Random encounters can be annoying all throughout the series, but the internet areas in later games are vastly more sensible and less annoying to navigate through, so in practice you will spend less time wandering around in confusing layouts and thus need to spend less time with random encounters.
Basically everyone admits that BN1 has some pretty horrific area design, even the main internet areas are a pain to navigate and some of the dungeons are just ridiculously shit.
