Ghost Stories was actually relatively popular in Japan, the story about the translators making a joke dub for it because it was a commercial failure was entirely made up to justify their hack job.

I mean I doubt it would have done well over here at all without the meme factor. It seemed exceedingly generic. I dunno about their actual justifications, but it makes perfect sense from the target audience perspective.

The characters in Gotta Protectors are a throwback to the NES generation but this line confirms the developers are racist and are doing white skinned characters out of racism and are mocking other ethnicities.
Unlike actual NES developers who are designing whatever character they liked most, this line confirms there is malicious intent by the developers here against black people.

It didn't flop in Japan, a specific shitty English dub they aired on an obscure block didn't do well before the Ghost Stories dub we know. The actual show got larger ratings in Japan, but the reason it never got a follow up despite the success was because it was created purely to fill a timeslot by contractors.

This English line proves they are excluding them ON PURPOSE, the translators are MOCKING black people, latinx, and everyone else)

Localizers are in a position of power. It's a weird obscure power, but it's power. They literally write the scripts for games. Some people would like to use that power to write whatever they want. Some did, but most realized that would be wrong to the creators, and the customers.
