I want WoW to be a good game but it's been disappointment after disappointment. All of Blizz's other games are a joke too, but WoW is supposed to be the flagship. This expansion will be what decides if Blizzard retains its position in the gaming industry as a giant or if it'll finally hit the concrete. Three bad expansions in a row is just too much to recover from.
WoW has been running on promises for a while now, but they never go through with them. Shadowlands didn't even have archeology, that's how you know how low effort the lore was.

Even if the player base "dwindled" to 1 million subs, Blizz would be happy to keep it around. WoW isn't a premier IP to Blizz anymore; its just something to keep around. WoW-fiends will keep the game alive because they've nothing else to do. The reality is WoW still has a good 10-15 years left. After that, the lack of new players are going to make them move on. However, by then no one will care enough.

I think the sub formula is ok. I'm excited for this expansion because it feels like they're taking a look at CORE systems of WoW, rather than adding new things. WoW already has premium end-game content in both PVE and PVP, so taking a look at the very basic stuff feels like a great move to me.
Though part of me hates this could honestly be an update in a patch and will sadly be sold as an expansion feature.

The most recent unofficial XIV census claimed about 1.6M active players with about 800k that have completed the latest expansion. This number doesn't include Free Trial players. That was about a month ago or so.
