I think filters are based
*filters this thread*
I actually like the look of the scanline filter in your pic on the right.
Most filters are made/used/promoted by people who haven't even seen a real CRT
Dilate
It depends on the game, some look better with it, some don't.
Preference, but a lot of old games relied on scanlines/composite to make certain visual effects to work
Most famous example is probably the waterfalls in Sonic 2
honestly not every crt looks good to me. For example I don't like how sony triniton looks like because it's too sharp and you can see every pixel. I remember 100% that as a child we had not a single crt where you would be able to see a single pixel. I know that because I tried to trace game and anime art from the tv.
In emulation you can pick a filter of your choice wihtout investing into a heavy rare expensive block.
We call them "shaders" because filters have a negative connotation.
looks like shit bro
I don't think about filters at all. It seems to be the path of embracing autism
not liking filters is like playing without antialias on a low res screen... anitalias improves the quality of the rendered images, even if it less true to the pixels it still more plastic and enjoyable
>nu-Yea Forums buzzword
Typical.
They can look good but the one you posted doesn't
at least post the full thing
>find a really nice filter, Newpixie
>works on one game, pic related
>refuses to work on Abe's Oddysee no matter what I do
fucking RetroArch
on gameboy you actually could see the pixels. I remember that. Because I perfectly drawn link in paint on windows. But you didn't see pixels in snes and mega drive games.
I hate retroarch too. Absolute abysmal menu system and getting shaders to work is a pain
Yeah. I think I actually like it. Normally I leave the filter off, but I here it's appealing. Almost like a primitive form of AA or something.
way too dark and the curved effect is disgusting
unless you're running downscaled 4k graphics that simulate each individual CRT RGB diode, it's fucking pointless and inaccurate.
I literally have one in my room. Some CRT filters are really damn accurate.
one thing I often dislike about filters is that they really wash out the color
useless
just turning down the brightness is enough for me
Filters are based but need to be used correctly. A few actually get the NTSC Composite look, which is much closer than a lot of "CRT" filters.
how do you get shaders outside of retroarch?
Literally what the best crt shaders do. Not that you actually need to go this far, some are designed to take advantages of the fact that you're not sticking your eyes on the screen in the first place and blend the pixels into something similar for an accurate result when you sit from a distance.
CRT filters are fucking awful and can't even come close to actual CRTs.
if you use them you're a fucking poser, simple as.
I like phosphor effects but the faux curvature is always way too fucking exaggerated. The actual image on a CRT is supposed to be calibrated to compensate for the curve so the image doesn't look distorted. Shit like this is fucking stupid
CRT filters are so embarrassing. The vast majority of them (at least, of the ones I've seen) look nothing like the real thing. It should honestly be pure cringe to anyone that has ever owned a real CRT.
It's even worse when you see retards putting a CRT filter on something like a Gameboy game. Stop doing this retarded shit.
I say if you're using an LCD display, then at the very least act like it and stick with raw pixels. Otherwise you're making a fool out of yourself.
keep bitching, I like it
lol
lmao
That's because its supposed to work that way.
Those old games weren't made for 4k monitors. They were made with CRTs in mind.
The unfiltered image is not how the game is supposed to look.
Now a lot of "CRT /scanline filters" aren't really that accurate. But those that are(mostly inhouse filters) elevate the visual image a lot.
Its literally how its supposed to look.
I think the good ones are good and the bad ones are bad
Is this CRT Royale?
>posting edited pics
the absolute state of CRTfags
This looks like shit because it's intentionally blurry as all hell. If I had a TV like this growing up, either I'd ask to have it fixed or buy a new one. This shit is just plain fucking bad.
CRTs did not have this much of a pronounced curve.
Most of these feel like they're made by people that can only imagine what playing vidya thru a CRT looked like instead of actually buying one and checking it out for themselves.
vaseline filter looking great
these are all edited bait images, CRTfags cope
Even if a crt filter on a gameboy game isn't accurate to IRL, nothing stops you from doing that because at the end of the day crts filters raw pixels better than nearest scaling ever will so it's still the better way to see the content. They're simply better for lower res content, accuracy be damned. You could even output handheld games to an actual CRT. It'll work great. You can even just play recent games in 480p on a CRT, why the hell not?
As for the rest of your post, lol.
But that's wrong? These games were played and designed on CRTs.
Does this shit not hurt your eyes?
where's the edit? please help a retard out i thought it looked cool
sus
Holy seethe
post the real one you lying faggot
what is this blur you autistic retard, my fucking eyes
This is fucking awful
Okay Zoomer.
tranny
I don't really understand why CRT filters are so shit. Maybe when 1080p was more common I could understand not having enough resolution to accurately represent phosphor bleed and screendoor, so they were made to be "close enough," but high res displays are so common nowadays that there shouldn't be any difficulty making shaders specifically to take advantage of that.
I understand that shooting for accuracy is a crap shoot because CRTs and analog signals were all over the fucking place, but at least aim for some sort of arcade accurate standard or whatever.
>CRTs did not have this much of a pronounced curve.
Many did, but it didn't make shit bend around like that
Look closely at how some of the shading literally changes shape/pixels around. CRTs should only act as dithering, not change the coloration and shape of the shading itself. Look at the UI in the castlevania image for the most obvious change.
Gib title please
rent free
Raw pixels are way more kino, true gamers that have been emulating since the early 2000s and actually beat the games they play like their pixels raw and fucking crispy fuck filters, if you have a CRT cool but who gives a shit just play that shit raw im gonna raw dog your mom after I raw dog this game fuck you
the raw pixel versions have reduced color palettes to look worse in comparison or something like that
the colors are back to normal with the CRT filter on which is why those look more detailed
see the detail magically popping up in the leftmost pillar here someone posted raw pixel screenshots from an emulator and yeah the gifs were edited without any doubt
>retroshill tranny
>shilling FOSS
I'm sorry, what?
Why, yes, I do use smoothing filters/shaders. They looks good nowadays.
You're wrong. That's just how pixel react through the aperture grille.
shadertoy.com
(you) earned it
your terrible filters will never look authentic
nope the pics have been debunked already, don't make me look it up in the archive retard
>CRTs should only act as dithering, not change the coloration
That's also wrong. The best CRT shaders will emulate the CRT blooming, halation and phosfor which will change the coloration among other things.
These pics aren't face, you can literally reproduce the same thing by yourself on retroarch. It really does look that much better with a filter like Royale.
thingsiplay.game.blog
>it's been deboonked!
Lmao
Fantastic.
But you have to find the right one. A good CRT one works on a lot of things, but handhelds often need something difference so I use alternatives for GB etc.
Have one. Grew up using it, but the slight difference is a small price I pay to not have to beg old hardware to not crap out, buy an everdrive, and have a whole room dedicated to it. It is tempting sometimes though. But I grew up with RF signal so that could be why I'm so willing to make the trade off.
Those pics are literally edited, though. Go and actually try to recreate the look from those images and compare it yourself, the raw pixel screenshot was edited to look worse than it normally would be. As another user pointed out, the pillar in the castlevania gif magically has far more detail out of nowhere that did not exist whatsoever before.
Have fun debunking all of these Seething retard. Take your meds.
>Have fun debunking all of these
Those are all real. The gifs posted earlier are not.
I don't know why fags on here think CRT filters look good. Games didn't look that great on actual CRT TVs when they were out. You ended up with blurred, smudged and overbled colors more often than not. So yes, these are "accurate" but it's inferior to a slight bilinear filter that simply smooths the pixelated look over a tad.
>defending anachronistic filter retardation
Please don't die on this hill.
Nice job taking the "MUH INTENDED LOOK" argument and wiping your ass with it.
They show the exact same behavior though. And that SOTN screenshot looks like the real thing to me?
