During the golden age of MMOs, people were drawn to them not because of roleplaying and fun, but because it was an early form of social media. The roastie infestation of gaming started with WoW. MMOs were never fun, they never had good gameplay, the only reason you remember them fondly is because you were too much of a loser to make real life friends and playing an MMO was a substitute for social life.

If you don't believe me go and play WoW classic, you'll see how fucking boring the game is without the fascinating novelty of being able to interract with strangers over the internet. On a side note this is something zoomers will never experience, they're born into a world where everyone is already using their real identities online, soon any form of anonymity, and I'm not talking about anonymous posting here but using an avatar or pseudonym, will be banned for bullshit reasons and it will be the final nail to the coffin that was 2000s internet.

2004 WoW was magical, people interacted and the community forums were active too. Like most things on the world it went to shit after 2008. WoW classic comes with pre-jaded people so the magics gone forever.

FF14 keeps some of the interaction in that it has less spazoid dicks due to the mandatory slow paced MSQ.
