What are some RTS games that have a great campaign?
What are some RTS games that have a great campaign?
Other urls found in this thread:
Homeworld 1 and arguably Cataclysm (or whatever the expansion is called now)
Original War
Age of Mythology
Starcraft 1 and Broodwar were pretty good too.
Heroes of Annihilated Empires is probably one of the most underrated ones. Shit's got a budget of like 8 dollars but it screams of soul.
Kohan
That one game where you control your character like in some RPG but it's also a RTS ugh I can't remember now....
Spellforce
yeah that one
>Kohan
Look, the first Kohan and it's expansion were amazing, and massively underrated RTS games.
But the campaigns were kinda garbage. The one in Immortal Sovereign was just terribly designed, and the ones in Ahriman's Gift were laughably short and lazy.
Kohan really only shined in skirmish or if you had a LOT of spare time, multiplayer with friends.
Still, I'm impressed that someone even remembers this game existed.
Age of Mythology.. one of the best RTS campaigns
Starcraft 2 Wings of Liberty
Attila Total War
Hearts of Iron 4
until they introduced china expansion
I'm sorry.. I don't understand your post. Age of Mythology never got any expansion.
China ruins... everything?
Wasn't it released like 15 years after the actual game isn't even made by the same people?
It's a Titan Quest situation.
>Age of Mythology never got any expansion.
if only
all my hopes are for 0 A.D getting out of jank phase
Warcraft 1-3 are all fantastic.
Nice fan art, user
Starcraft 2
Rise of Legends has my favorite RTS campaign
The gameplay is great and it has good missions with interesting objectives.
Red Alert
>Rise of Legends
To this day, I can't get over the low-fps animations of the units. I would've loved to be there when that decision was made and everyone else on the team apparently went "yeah!".
Microsoft hired Forgotten Empires, which was a group of modders who made an AoE II expansion-like mod, got it official, and then along with Skybox Labs made future expansion content for HD and AoM EE, and then later the DE versions for 1-3. They supposedly have some former Ensemble employees currently but otherwise are basically the reason 2 & 3 keep getting new shit.
Related to OP's question I'd think the last two AoE II DE DLCs have some pretty great campaigns honestly. The Forgotten and Kangdoms ones are however probably some of the weaker ones though, despite the former also getting revamped.
I've always liked Rise of Nations.
Nah, RoN shits all over it. RoL felt like a downgrade.
Huh, I never noticed that when I was playing RoL back in the day, but then again I was playing it on a potato of a PC. I just remember being impressed by all the details on the units.
>Huh, I never noticed that when I was playing RoL back in the day, but then again I was playing it on a potato of a PC. I just remember being impressed by all the details on the units.
I mean, yeah, the game looks pretty good visually. It's just that the units have animations that either have very few key-frames within them or were recorded in like
>What are some RTS games that have a great campaign?
They have mostly already been mentioned in this thread. Specifically Homeworld and Homeworld cataclysm. Warcraft 3 and Starcraft wings of liberty. Red alert 2. Age of mythology.
Homeworld and CoH1
no other games compare
I liked Empire Earth's campaigns, especially the russian one given how nuts it gets at the end
blitzkrieg 1
>especially the russian one
The Russian campaign was insane. I love it.
I think they undersold themselves with that parody name
I really like AoE3 campaign story, it's like a movie.
How's AoE3 Definitive Edition anyway?
Does Dawn of War II count?
>How's AoE3 Definitive Edition anyway?
It's pretty good. It honestly looks better than AoE4. If you liked AoE3, go for it.
Age of Mythology is my favourite. I play it at least once a year desu.
Okay, that does look horribly janky. Like I said, I probably didn't notice it as much because my setup used to be crap, but I can completely understand why that would take you out of the game.
>Age of Mythology is my favourite.
It might be blasphemous to say but I think I like Age of Mythology even more than Age 2.
Fuck yeah it does
>mfw Armies of Exigo difficulty spike
I know it's not a "pure" RTS but I still like it.
Is AoE1 worth playing today? I got it with the other definitive edition AoE games but I never hear people talk about it.
it still blows my mind battle realms didn't catch on. then again, I forget that was around the time warcraft 3 was released.
>I am Kenji, Lord of the Serpent Clan, and my ancestor broke the world.
every single Command & Conquer game.
>Is AoE1 worth playing today? I got it with the other definitive edition AoE games but I never hear people talk about it.
Hard to say, really. It definitely has aged. The definitive edition does make a good job to make it look better, at least but if you've played AoE2 or AoM before and try to go back to AoE1, it might be hard.
It's more that AoE2 has superseded it in every way. I guess there's the campaign appeal if you care.
>it still blows my mind battle realms didn't catch on. then again, I forget that was around the time warcraft 3 was released.
I bought it back when it came out on a whim and loved it.
Battle Realms
Company of Heroes
Hate me all you want but for me it's Tiberian Sun.
It's real-time tactics so debatable, but yes. I absolutely love Myth. Closest we'll get to a Black Company adaptation and first two games have some of the most depressing campaigns.
Incredible campaigns but theyre rtt not rts
Anyone played this?
This guy knows his shit
Yeah, but nobody outside of Yea Forums will know the difference. For casuals it's simply a strategy game.
The shift to linear perspective rendering was a mistake. Orthographic looks better and gives these single viewpoint RTS games more clarity.
Emergence
what the fuck WAS with that mission, though? you're barely out of tutorial and game hits you with the most difficult mission in the entire game.
No. It's one of those situations where the sequel made the original obsolete.
Stormrise was fun
Wish I did.
Petroglyph might not always make good games but they are at least interesting for a playthrough
That looked liked Theris, it has been a long time since you sent him to the underworld Arkantos, fighting old battles again?
Anyone remember Dragonshard? It was a pretty middling RTS, but I really liked how it handled hero integration and how they were off doing dungeon crawling as well. I liked the hero unit implementation better than the way WC3 did it.
Honestly it's one of those cases where it's mogged by its sequels in almost every way, but the ancient civilization setting can be a good reason enough to try it out. The campaigns themselves are very dry comparatively, what with a general lack of both event triggers and voiced dialogue with funny accents, but instead cover a larger period of time for a given civ than just following one or two military commanders; Glory of Greece for example goes from Athens initially overcoming other Greek tribes, to covering the Trojan War, Xenophon's March, and Alexander the Great.
