worse than the ps2 in every way.

Ahead of its time, and a badly designed controller

what did these things do?

sega sisters... it's our turn now!!

I bought it on 9/9/99. It was light-years ahead of ps/n64
It wasn't even out when Dreamcast came out, dipshit zoomer.

Better than ps1 and n64 but less great games so it can't compete

You trained chaos with them. Not much else.

>It was light-years ahead of ps/n64

not remotely same generation

Porno on the internet in your bedroom in 1999. So probably similar to anyone born after.

Zoom zoom zoom

They were memory cards. Some games would put mini games on them that you could play independently of the DC.

While in the controller, it would show you something defined by the game. Sometimes a logo, sometimes something gameplay related.

2 of them could be connected to play games as well.

From Snes to Dreamcast, it truly felt like next gen

Too bad the fucking moron sunk all of his money into sega. Poor bastard.

I meant the leap from that to Dreamcast was crazy. It is probably the biggest generational leap unless you count 2d to 3d.

>It is probably the biggest generational leap unless you count 2d to 3d.

not really the dreamcast doesnt have pixel shader hardware, the ps2 is a more significant leap. as was the snes-ps1

Or pc?

>Not enough hype
>Most people didn't even know what it was, particularly related to the Saturn
>Sega just... stopped releasing games in 1998, then suddenly launched this in 1990
But everyone who tried mine enjoyed it and wanted one. Then they cancelled it.

Sega is so fucking stupid.

Just port Panzer Dragoon Zwei, Saga, and let us be done.

Sorry, typo. 1999, not 1990.

>Then they cancelled it.

they didn't cancel anything they ran out of money lol

Very impressive when it came out. Not so much when the PS2 released. There was alot of cope from Dreamcast owners, I should know I was one of them. If I had to sum it up it felt like being an early adopter of the new thing, you got a taste of the next gen graphics but it felt like being a beta tester once the competition did their thing. Then they announced that they will drop support and the coping continued: "Microsoft will buy Sega and continue support", "the developers will continue making games for it", etc...Then the Gamecube released and it had Sonic Adventure and it truly was over.

It was great for a short time. I played Incoming and Sonic Adventure on Christmas morning.
It was too soulful to be allowed to continue

Like a cheap Neo Geo: Full of arcade ports, sold like shit, died too soon.

>tfw playing powerstone 2 in my college dorm

good times.

Virtua Tennis and Phantasy Star Online were an early glimpse at what online console gaming could be like.

Like witnessing the future, but at the end our hope was crushed like an ant under a shoe.

Actually seeing its graphics for the first time where I'm used to seeing PS1/N64 games is jaw dropping to say the least. It was really ahead of it's time.

This was Genesis.
I wanted that thing so bad because I was a stupid kid that thought it would be awesome for Mortal Kombat 2.

It was awesome. Sonic adventure 1/2, powerstone 1/2, jet set radio, crazy taxi 1/2, oldschool demo disks. I didn't own a ton of games, but boy was it a vibe.

>Not enough hype
I remember the launch being huge but then it's like it just hit a wall a year in and games started trickling out. I was devastated when they announced it was being cancelled so quickly.

Salty coins and milk

I loved mine. I bought the keyboard and mouse for it and played q3a all day

I didn't have the mouse and keyboard but got Quake 3 for free. It was utterly unplayable with the controller though.

I was too young to enjoy it, but my uncle had a Dreamcast that broke when I turned 5 :(

An endearing failure. But within just a couple years of its discontinuation even its library was less remarkable, as its numerous great arcade ports inevitably found their way to the PS2 or were otherwise outmatched (Soul Calibur 2 completely eclipsed the first one, for example). It became irrelevant very quickly.

It was awesome.

I clocked up hundreds of hours on DC Soul Calibur but never really liked SC 2 that much. I think I rented it on PS2 for a weekend and never wanted a copy of my own beyond that.

Lots of arcade ports + Sonic Adventures, Crazy Taxi and Jet Set Radio

Gamecube version is best, Link is the most interesting crossover character of the three

VIR-TUA .. TENNNNIS

Why does the nostalgia hurt so much.

It was peak soul, no other console could compete, ahead of its time, still waiting for Power Stone to be ported to PC

>what was the Dreamcast like?
felt like you were stepping into the future. the insane graphic upgrade over the past console gen, playing online games for the first time. peak p2k soul

The closest thing to being in a death cult without actually being in a death cult.

>It was light-years ahead of ps/n64
I mean as it should. It came out 5 years after it had better be.

A half-step into the next generation, it had a lot of similarities with the Wii U, even down to the same gimmick screen-in-controller thing which just raised the price of memcards. It was based on an arcade board (the NAOMI) and a big selling point was that it was an arcade machine in your home like that SNK one but way less expensive, the problem was that this was at a point where arcades were on a downward trend and having perfect arcade ports was not the selling point that it had been during the Atari days. And so 99% of the library was either arcade ports or enhanced last gen ports (again, like the Wii U). SEGA tried and failed to make appealing alternatives to the big hitter franchises of competing consoles and ultimately had no real system selling game. The online feature also came too early, the internet wasn't nearly as widespread as it is today and playing over 56k was naturally not a flawless experience. Ultimately, unless you absolutely adored shmups it wasn't really a great console and mostly just a port machine.

Yeah, Heihachi was a boring character compared to Link and Spawn. Think Playstation's exclusive character was going to be Cloud from FF7 for a time but it fell through.

phantasy star and crazy taxi afterschool
best timeline

not him but i was there retard he is right. It was just a very early next gen console when hardly any next gen games were ready or being made so they stuffed it with PlayStation titles that performed better, games like RE2, Shadow Man and Tomb Raider. It's akin to how so many PS5 games are just really last gen games running way better.

>ven down to the same gimmick screen-in-controller thing which just raised the price of memcards.
They had cheaper ones that didn't have a screen. I think I only had VMU with a screen that I got at launch and the rest were just plain.

>2 of them could be connected to play games as well.
There was also a feature to transfer shit from games that way and copy saves too.

*had one

>not him
definitely him

Gamecube has the worst controller to play the game on though.

meds ect...

My older brother said we'll wait for PS2.

>HEY HEYYY COME ON OVER AND HAVE SOME FUN WITH CUHRAYZEE TAXI
>YAH YAH YAH YAH YAHHH

Easy as shit to emulate.
Could run on a potato

Literally just memory cards. The screen often had a cool gimmick though. Like in Re3/CV it showed your health. In Re2 it showed your health and your ammo. In Sonic Adventure 1/2 you could install a mini game that was like a tamagotchi so you could raise your chao.

The capacity on those things was fucking horrible.

Dreamcast was a lot of fun.

Sonic adventure 1 & 2
Soulcalibur
Power Stone
House of the Dead 2
Capcom vs SNK,
NFL Blitz
Grandia 2,
Mortal Kombat 4 Gold
Jet Set Radio,
Seventh Cross Evolution
Vigilante 8

It got me into some series that I missed out on, like Resident Evil, Worms, Tony Hawk, and Unreal Tournament. It was also the first console with decent arcade ports.

It also really helped me try out a bunch of games because it was super easy to pirate for. Had a family member burn me CDs of a bunch of games to try out.

SOVL

>play phantasy star online
>skies of arcadia which is my fav jrpg still
>chuchu rocket was fun as hell

Was a great console i still have mine
