ITT: Games that are easily, far and away the best in their series

I have a massive nostalgia boner for Gen 2 but I know the best designed games overall were gen 5.

There's a certain style and aesthetic in the first two games that's the rest of the series severely lacks. The atmosphere of the entire adventure comes together cohesively, like Red's outfit, the bike, bicycle road, and the journey between areas. After GS, it feels like those are just added in for the sake of tradition, rather than being a natural part of the world and adventure.

I played SS and was surprised by how much I liked it. I usually hate remakes.

I actually take this back. D2 is the best but its not far and away better than D1 and D1 is better in some regards.

d1 has better pacing and atmosphere, itemization is completely different.
d2 has better mechanics, itemization concept, scope and quests
they play completely differently. their fanbases do not overlap

Pokemon is ultimately about bridging the gap between nature and technology. Pokemon beyond gen 3 is about having pokemon. Even gen 3 is very unclear with its teams having poor stated goals that ultimately seem suicidal. Gen 5 attempts to call back to the original concept but even the villains in those games just see pokemon as the end goal of pokemon.

Gen2's Achilles heel is the bad level curve. If you can overlook that one glaring issue it's just a better game in every way.

as someone who has had this game on their radar for years now, what's wrong with redux? I definitely have wanted to sink some teeth into this game for a while now but have yet to commit.

Gen 2 is the most overrated pile in existence. It's just gen 1 but worse. Worse world, worse pokemon, worse everything. It's only popular because it was the first pokemon game trend chasers and late adopters played. It was literally just more of the same and anyone with a brain lost interest in pokemon after playing these.
