That's because The West was Utah, Nevada, the Dakota's... RDR2 is 1880s? Colorado and Texas were both already states. The South was all settled and The Frontier was populated by northern Midwest folks moving west. Aka, the link between West and South is portrayed as thin because it WAS thin.
