I dare say that it wasn't that MJ was just that good, it was that celebrity culture was different back then. Back then there was no internet or social media that allowed you to know everything about a particular celebrity at any given time. All that you knew about them was what they said in some interview that was on tv or a magazine and the rest was speculation. There was a level of mystique back then that is unlikely to ever be present again.

For me, it's Thriller. In large part because I'm also a Vincent Price fan.

Hard to say. The most recent rereleases of Sonic 3 have the soundtrack intact, so they likely got that sorted out. Thing is it wasn't just MJ who did the soundtrack.
