Localization: Triangle Strategy
Wow this changes the entire game I'm gonna go insane holy shit
kill yourself
A lot of the dialogue in the english dub seems to be ad-libbed, yes. I remember there was a line where Frederica was saying some lame shit about how she's a strong brave woman or w/e the fuck
hooooooly shit im going crazzzzzy!
SAVE ME NIGGERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I noticed it as early as the demo because the text in my language is based on the Japanese script and is completely different from the English voice acting. Thank goodness I could play with Japanese voices in the full game so I never had to listen to Square Enix US' fanfiction.
Those are all minor changes, but they're all the exact same idea being pushed. I hate this kind of crap. Not enough to ruin the text, but write your own story to push your strong stoic one-not female character shit, Jesus Christ.
The worst part is that it's fairly well done otherwise, they just couldn't help themselves.
Some of the lines are kind of dumb but give off a similar meaning for the most part, but shit like complaining about "Trish" sounding polite when it clearly just her being tongue in cheek is stupid
>frederica
my bad, i meant Cordelia. Lots of her lines when she "grows" just seems like a whole GIRLS ARE STRONG moment
if it doesn't matter then why change it?
if you can't answer this question then you should kill yourself
If there is a team of localizers, which is likely considering the inconsistencies, isn't it possible that for some of the more minor ones some were interpreted in different ways than others. Im not talking about examples of things being rewritten as a note
Yaaaas Frederica is so independent and powerful! Even though she still spends the entire game being meek and submissive to everyone!
And her character story involves cooking and ways to please Serenoa!
Isn't her whole character arc trying to take charge in order to liberate her people?
it was translated objectively poorly, changing the meaning of the sentence from a threat to a warning. if this is an oversight as you say, and not an intentional, choice then they're simply bad at their job.
Wich lenguaje?. Please be spanish
I agree that they are bad at their jobs, especially if it is inconsistent. A lot of translators in the industry are. I dont think this one is nearly as much of a propaganda push as some of the others, just incompetence
It's not all gender, the main thing is there's no concern for "equivalence". It's like you're trying to rewrite a scene from memory, the general idea is the same but the particulars are all different.
IS THAT A NON-LITERAL TRANSLATION?
SAVE ME MOOGY-SAMAAAAAAAAA
Yeah I mean that works better in a western context. We have spicy women.
>translation is something else entirely completely unrelated to the original script
>"what seems to be the problem?"
The game has "spicy" women too. Frederica isn't one of them
I have all hiragana memorized and I'm through the first two columns of katakana, how long till I can atleast bullshit my way through these games?
Taking away all traces of sexism and gender roles from medieval settings is kinda distasteful to me.
There are some cases where it's okay though.
A year or less if you spend 8 daily hours reading from now
just why
Knowing the letters and even the kanji simply isn't enough. You gotta build a vast vocabulary and get used to the grammar and the different ways sentences are structured. And then it's a lot of reading, practicing and studying until it clicks.
Took me like 10 months until out of nowhere I started understanding lenghty conversations comfortably.
If you really like japanese stuff and you have the time to study a little everyday it's worth it learning japanese. Never have to deal with localization drama ever again
Reading bad translations is part and parcel of playing Japanese games. If you have a problem with that either learn Japanese or stick to western media.
Is the /jp/ guide the best place to start with?
About 800 hours of studying. Your current accomplishment should have taken about 2 though so about 400x what you currently invested.
censorshipfags lost me with bravely second
that game is still impossible to discuss without faggots shitting and pissing themselves for 500 posts because they turned an indian into a cowboy
Looks like most of the ones changed are sexist or allude to rape. Which is a huge difference in context so it's a very poor translation job. The game is basically despair porn already for most of it, why the fuck would they sugarcoat those aspects of it?
Like what? Genuinely curious
The fan translation makes Svarog come off as more aggressive as if he’s one of those generic in laws who doesn’t like Serenoa while the actual translation makes Svarog come off as more neutrally cordial. It can be interpreted as Serenoa shouldn’t incur his waifu’s wrath but can also be interpreted to include other people including Svarog himself.
Svarog has no reason to hate Serenoa at that point in the game. Kill yourself faggoy
I never said whether it mattered or not. I was saying I don't care. Kill yourself.
And you censoring the entire job to the point of forcing japs to make a new model and textures is a minor change?
What's moogy up to lately? Didn't tlwiki disband like a decade ago?
This is actually disgusting
I don't have a problem with strong female characters. In fact, many rank among my favorite. Avlora from this game, Agrias from FFT, etc.
But when you shouldn't have to try to make a female character strong. It's like trying to be cool or trying to have game; you have it or you don't and it's always awkward if you try and put effort into it, it comes off unnatural.
This is where the West is retarded: they try too hard to make a female character strong, usually by putting down males, whereas a truly strong female character is so because they are simply shown to be strong, and happen to be female.
Improve the world by leaving it
Where's that guy who said the English translation of FFT was too Shakespearean and hard to understand? I want to call you subhuman trash again, respond quickly please.
Yeah it works. I didn't follow it to a t but it's not some meme advice that's secretly bad in order to screw people off like some people spam on some threads
My advice is you don't need to study like a fuckload of hours everyday, it's easy to burn yourself off doing that. IMO it's better long term to be consistent and study just a bit everyday. Create the habit of studying everyday and months later you will notice you learned a lot.
I bumped into a bro interested in this game in a Xenoblade thread earlier. I really hope he stumbles upon this thread and sees the shilling campaign for this commie localization shit with his own eyes.
Really like the font choice for both languages in this game. Anyone knows how demanding it is to emulate? My PC can't quite run Demon's Souls perfectly, a stuter here and there.
Good. That's how every censored game should be treated.
Thank you user.
I feel like I should take priority of learning calculus first because I forgot almost everything
That was fucking months ago faggot Jesus Christ I didn't expect to find out I live in your fucking head.
This. Literal translations are boring as fuck.
You guys don't know how well you have it, back in my days we got Working Designs and we had to deal with it. I dig the flowery localizations, not translations, as long as they don't alter the story significantly or change names completely.
For ex; Dragon Quest gets shit on a lot for giving people accents which doesn't actually change what characters are saying just how they say it, but in DQ2 they changed the entire castle name from Laurasia (Hero's gf was named Laura in DQ1) to Midenhall. THAT'S retarded.
>Good. That's how every censored game should be treated.
Eat a bullet.
>varis
Not stepping in that nonce shithole again.
That's an inherent issue with translations taking too many liberties, though, isn't it? When they're free to change as they see fit, you're bound to get shit like this, of the localization writers completely missing the point of the text and changing something quite major without even realizing.
Ignorance can produce results as bad as malice. They shouldn't be free to change things as important as names without at least consulting with the devs first. And if consulting the devs isn't an option, then just don't change it.
I dropped out of college during the whole covid shit and spent all that time learning japanese and now I got back and barely remember calculus and all that stem shit as well
Sounds like a colossal waste of time.
>Literal translations are boring as fuck.
What exactly do you retards want? Every conversation being a stand up routine?
Japanese text: please come visit my store
>ugh this is so dry and boring
Localization: ayooo you got some bling bling? We got over 9000 items for sale yo
>perfect
BRO shes strong dont fuck with her bro
College, or learning japanese?
war of the lions made it a lot more verbose, needlessly really
whoa dude you're so uncaring and aloof just like sasuke
the psp english 'correction' is garbage
The Japanese one implies a masculine protection over the honor of the women, and there would be disappointment from him if you failed.
The English one implies she can take of herself and that you should fear her if you fail.
The difference is pretty clear, ignoring is going to make these small measures worse and worse.
Learning Japanese. At least in college you can get a STEM or business degree and have a sustainable career.
both of them are kind of bad in their own ways and we will probably never get a middle-ground translation unless a hacker really wants to do it
most 90s translations had massive flaws, it's too bad
You stupid fucking moron. I haven't even played this game and this single line of dialogue completely changes the personality of the characters. In the original it sounds like she's an innocent girl that could cry easily and he lacks tact. In the translation it sounds like she's an opinionated woman with a bad temper. So a single line of dialogue can completely change a game, yes.
You're arguing with a shill.
People who use verbose as a criticism are usually retards. WotL dialogue is exquisitely written because it's done by a person who understands and has read a lot of English literature. It completely elevates the mediocre script of the original
I've started the trek to learning Jap myself last night. I'm having fun memorizing this shit honestly. I guess I'll see if that stays when I'm done with kana and start hitting the grammar guides or if that's when despair sets in.
I will do my best to push on though. We CAN learn Japanese!
Do let me get this straight.
This board is nothing but a bunch of faggots pointing out what makes them personally mad like this website was their blog or something and, then, we just talk about it?
People who use "elevates" as praise are usually retards.
>Laurasia
>Laura
>Asia
Westerns are such bitches nowadays goddamnit man.
Even a doting father caring about his daughter can't be shown?
You are only saying this because you have some innate culture superiority complex. "Sure, I play Japanese games, but it's us AMERICANS that are improving them. I'm so thankful they're punching on these hacky scripts."
If it doesn't matter, why not change it?
Seriously, it's all one big massive fucking cope from you faggots. A manga does this, and you see how shit it is, because there are half a dozen fan-translations along with the official one. Same with anime. But because video game localization is a lot harder, you delude your mind and say "no, this is good. This is great."
>holy fucking shit the translation doesn't match my own translation verbatim
kill yourself
yes, and in her own arc she grows less and less convincing making her panic more and more but gladly serenoa is there to save the day. in the golden route however she is more successful
Because it's not your original writing, and you're stepping on someone else's work because you feel like it.
Notice how there are more posts defending a translation change when it's a Nintendo game.
EOPs seething.
You should've been here in 2016 when Fire Emblem Fates came out. Six years later, basically everyone fucking agrees it's literally one of the worst localizations ever, but February 2016? "It's not that bad, guys! I'm having FUN! You remember FUN?"
you should switch out the zoomer face for the fatlus face.
>"Bro why complain about fanfiction just take it up the ass like a good consumer"
Daily reminder that twitter trannies invade this place and are pro-localization just to "own the weebs". Enjoy your forever culture war
once you know the kana you are at the same stage as learning any language with roman letters. aka youre at stage zero. if you dont even know kana youre at stage -1
>a forum specifically for eops who don't want to learn japanese but still want to circlejerk over how much they hate localizations and the west without actually doing anything about it
finally
a place more pathetic than Yea Forums
