I like both.
The dungeon crawling is absolutely brilliant. The problem is BBI is at the end of the game. If they added a grindable early game dungeon like the everfall or BBI they would have improved the game massively so it didnt need to "get better x hours in". The best part of DD is the big monster combat and the entire early game is covered in shitty bandits and goblins.

It does have depth though. Classes actually play distinctly from each other, there are minor but appreciated tactics you can use to make fights easier and smoother. Such as climbing on an armoured cyclopes helmet makes them remove it so you get more damage. Slicing off Saurian tails. If I remember right fire damage stops hydra heads regenerating. There is nothing cool like that in Souls.

OP is overselling it, i think the general consensus is that its a heavily flawed game that does certain key things so well that it transcends the mediocrity

the map is dogshit, theres not much enemy variety, and the game is clearly rushed.
but holy fuck seeing my mage Piccolo get grabbed by a griffin, jumping onto it moments before it flies miles into the air, then hanging on for dear life while i slash at it with a fire boon that sets it alight spiralling to the ground like a fucking comet. thats one of the best moments ive ever had in a game and those moments make up for everything else.

i think dark souls 2 actually let you use ballistas.

Unlike Elden Ring, the Open World of DD is boring and a waste of time. Also, the trash escort quests really slow it down. However, the dungeons are on par with Dark Souls dungeons, if only they were bigger. Most dungeons feel incomplete, like there was meant to be something more in them. Obviously this is true for certain areas but you just get the feeling in all dungeons. Especially that one that acts as a shortcut - the mines. It just feels like it should be way bigger.
