Isn't Knuckles being portrayed as dumb a more recent thing thanks to Boom and memeing on the "Robotnik tricked him again" jokes? I don't recall him really being stupid in Adventure or most of the Gamecube/DS/3DS games. He was turned into a total and complete utter imbecile in Boom though who literally could not tell his left from his right. And they seem to have carried that into newer non-Boom games and the movie.

I can't imagine having a tail would be anything other than a hassle with no real benefit.

Does the whole helps with balance thing even work for bipeds? In terms of mammals many quadrupeds in nature have tails, but most bipeds do not, and the few that do are something like kangaroos that have a massive one which is mostly flesh and bone, not a smaller fluffy one like foxes.

Good luck navigating in small spaces without knocking everything over, not getting it caught in doors, and dealing with it picking up dirt everywhere. Would it even be possible to comfortably sit in a chair without a hole cut in it? Pants would be a pain too.

Very ineffective way to do that, you would basically have to thread a needle behind your back every time. Would make far more sense for it to just be a clasp that you close over the hole, similar to the way the front of jeans clasp together, but without the zipper part.

I'd say his movie personality seems to be much closer to his SA1 personality, albeit more with a warrior angle. Still has that aspect of goal and duty, though. Definitely much closer than an angry yelling nigger he was in Heroes and later.
