I never realized just how linear the first quarter of the game is. Thanks to that user from /vrpg/ I now do. Anyways, I hate the combat system or in general any ATB based system. But I vastly prefer it over VII. The materia system is cool and all, but I rather character specific/specialties. Makes assembling party members fun.

Of course.
FF9 is just plain cozy fun. It's arguably the most polished of the PS1 FFs, it's got a really nice battle system, the music is stellar, the characters are solid, and it's just simply a good time. It's also a bit of a love letter to oldschool FF stuff right before FFX, which was pretty much the last good FF before things began careening down a pit.
If you're considering playing it, I'd highly recommend playing it with Moguri Mod and some other stuff like it, just to really let the visuals pop on modern hardware. Also, you'd definitely want to play it on PC, the PS1-era load times suck.

Don't even finish that thought, the combat is downright dreadful. Animations take forever. The speed of everything is horribly slow. For comparison - you can play FF9 on the fastest speed it goes and it's still slower than FF7 and FF8 on their slowest.

Tying abilities to equipment that you will outgrow long before you actually obtain the ability linked to it (short of doing some massive grinding) has been and will always be the worst way of doing abilities in a JRPG.

Homie I've been playing JRPGs since FF2(4) came out in the US in 91. By the time FF9 came out I had played dozens of other JRPGs. Wut? Most abilities only take 30 AP and you'll get 2P for almost every fight. Literally 15 fights. If you're not fleeing battles you learn most skills way before you even find a new weapon, especially if a character has AP. You don't even need to grind.
It still looks and sounds like ass, even with the mod. The original is still the best version.

It was the comfiest PSX FF, but really drops off after the half way point. I can barely remember what happens after the Bahamut vs Alexander fight which is the peak of the game
ff7 came out first and ff9 came out when everyone was onto the PS2 and ffx was just about arrived so no one cared about it. it's the best ps1 ff imo though.

Even though i am a longtime FF fan (or used to be), i missed out on FF9 when it came out. Tried to play it last year bit had to drop it after 15 hours. Pacing is too slow, the world was boring and the battles were also annoying. The characters were the strongest part of it but even they couldn’t keep me engaged.
