So let me tell you why this is an unpopular opinion. Different forms of media have different strengths and weaknesses. You don't read a book for the same reasons as you going to watch a movie and you don't watch a movie for the same reasons you go watch a stage play. Stage plays need an additional air of theatricality to account for the fact that the audience is in a chair away free action versus a movie with a camera can give you an up-close and visual on every actor who must now adjust to account for that. In the case of video games the difference in medium is that there is a player who can impose his will on the game world itself. Cinema is a single line narrative let's start from beginning to end and with collated experiences based on a character the writer selected. Put in video games the player might decide to do something completely different or completely break the pace that the writer set up. And that's fine. Players can learn about the world the right has created in a more organic way and poke at it in multiple ways. Maybe the player wants to be a big hero then again maybe the player wants to be an antihero then again maybe the player wants to try out being a full tilt villain. Or maybe a player will be interested in learning about the small stories in the various side quest pepper through the game rather than the big Earth shattering story that justifies the game world. Because the world itself is a story whether that game is open world or linear. Or fuck it, throw everything I just said out of the window and you can still have a fun puzzle like this small indie game called Tetris. That's something that movies can't emulate without bringing out another movie to explore that other avenue. No matter how hard the medium tries.
So claiming that it's a good thing to take away the main thing that sets a video game narrative apart to be a shitty copy a medium that already exists is fucking stupid.
