If I can create my own character, I will create a male character that looks most like myself.
If I can choose between a male or female version of what is essentially the same character, I will choose the male.
If I can choose between multiple, possibly class-based characters, I will choose the class I want regardless of the gender.
If the character is fixed and part of the story, I really don't care if it's male or female.
