I disliked the clash mechanics
I disliked shielding
But I really disliked the homogenous combo routes and certain character's utter reliance on 5AA
I got over autocombos in like 3 days when I learned my BnBs but I really just wish they could have an option to turn if off. I think UNI did the whole smart steer/combo mechanic better. The weak combo game bores me the most since they just don't feel satisfying to pull off because meterless damage caps at like 3.5k
The designs never bothered me. Ciel flat out looks and sounds better and is topping Tsuki popularity polls at 2nd place when back then she was like the 2nd lowest main heroine.
The autism from Nasu about spoilers and character inclusion choices turned out to be a complete fucking lie so that's a bit disingenuous.

But hey, Japan still loves it and it is financially the most successful Melty Blood and French Bread game so at least it means we have the money for improved sequels.

The game actually came out and it sucked.
MBTL started off with good playercounts and then tanked. By comparison, KOFXV has not had functioning matchmaking for two entire months and is still retaining interest and a playerbase. Around this time everyone had already forgotten about TL.
There's just no excuse for it or beating around the bush, the game is bad.

It's just worse than MBAA. Worse mechanics. Worse animations. Bad nuTakeuchi artwork. Even the awesome OST of MBAA wasn't replicated. Sure, it's in HD I guess but who cares? I'd rather just play MBAA.

I feel bad that I still haven't bought it because I was looking forward to it since the first reveal. The fact all the DLC characters have been free so far is cool to see so it's definitely the next fighter I'll play.

The game wasnt supposed to be anything else than a niche fighting game, but since the retarded anime FGC is still buttblasted by how Guilty Gear was an actual success by catering to people that would actually buy and play the game instead of jerking off with the other 10 guys on discord, they decided to use Type Lumina to cope. Its a shame becauae I actually do like Type Lumina to some degree, flaws and all, instead I got an artificially hyped product out of spite instead of playing it with people who genuinely liked it.

It genuinely is one of these cases where the game is blatantly massively inferior to the previous entry. The bizarre thing is the autocombos and shielding actually made it harder to play while MBAA was actually a pretty easy/intuitive game.

It's one of the few cases where I think the drop in interest was deserved. They genuinely fucked up the gameplay. It's still playable but no one is going to play it over MBAA which has good online already.

KoFXV imo has similar but less severe issues where they added a bunch of stuff to make it 'easier' for beginners (0f throws, rolls being absurdly good again, traditional KoF pressure being weak again) but all this does is make playing the game well finnicky and awkward and require option selects and similar obtuse shit to just allow it to play like the older games did. The opposite of making it easier for beginners.

Gear players are notorious for being boomer retards who hate change. They rioted against BlazBlue and every single thing that series did for years. I don't like Strive at all either, but the Gear players rioting over that one as well was an inevitability.
Note how you see none of them playing KOF even though it's the exact game they want and it's been successful. Instead they're clinging to the next gimmicky anime game.

If you don't follow those people on Twitter, it's like they never existed. Type Lumina did sell a lot for the type of game it is, though. There's no denying that. I think the early netplay issues and the vocal outcry about shield and moon drive did drive away a lot of players, though. It's easier to drop the game than to actually figure out how it works. There's a lot of other options.

Seeing people playing the game and seeing the community active drives more people to want to play, and Melty doesn't have the numbers. It's pretty hard to compete with the likes of Strive and Jive.

The suckass shield, clash frames and autocombos is what ruined it. Fuck Kamone for doubling down on shield buffs too.

Then it did come out and within seconds we all realized it was one of the worst fighting games released this gen, down there with even Cross Tag.

No, no other KoF game has 0f throws. There is not a single other KoF game where you can't meaty someone at point blank range because throws beat meaties. Throws are 1f in KoF and lose to normals. Not in XV. This means if your character can't confirm outside of throw range your character sucks, unless they have an OS.

This has been the main complaint about the game since release. 0f throws add nothing to the game whatsoever except allowing scrubs to mash throw on wakeup and beat properly timed meaties. That works in *zero* other KoF games. It's a thing in Guilty Gear, however normals in guilty gear are much longer to compensate. Being unable to do a cl.C meaty because you will just get thrown is awful.

The other stuff is more opinion. Again, most KoFs you can punish a KoF roll on reaction. You can't in XIV or XV because they are so fast and go so far. It is why, again, all the good characters had CD options selects to cover wakeup rolls. Except they don't even work in XV because you get thrown due to the 0f throws, meaning to get even basic pressure you are guessing on a person's wakeup as to which dumb overtuned option they are going to do before you can make them fucking block for 2 seconds.

As for KoF pressure, it kind of still works but hops and reruns are weak (though stronger than XV) because things are generally much more negative in this game and normals also have higher hitboxes. Even a cr.a will beat a hop usually. Most characters just poke from neutral and characters like Iori and Kyo who rely on that old school pressure either suck (Iori) or don't play that way in this game and just poke instead (Kyo).

throws are not an issue for virtually anyone since it's so easy to get safejumps. the reliance on safejumps shouldn't surprise you given oda also made SFIV and that game was safejump city too. the main thing this fucks up is classic KOF roll crossup mix, which is absolutely a major oversight but other aspects of KOFXV are so powerful it's hardly missable. even rolling to beat safejumps is not reliable. watch people play this game at high level and note how people are getting fucked up hardcore when made to block, it's not nearly as big of an issue as you're making it out to be.

this is a double edged sword since rolls in KOFXV also have higher recovery than they did before. this is why you see zoners like joe raping the game because he's so difficult to get past and then he hits you once into a death combo. ralf can't be easily stopped from throwing out big normals either since rolls are so slow to recover.

Every single new mechanic was bad.

Shield was bad. I am all for strong defensive options but don't turn it into RPS. At least Soul Calibur's equivalent had character specific outcomes so it wasn't real RPS once you knew the options and risk/reward.
The autocombos were bad. They are manageable but irritating and after you have played the game for more than 20 minutes just get in the way.
Moon skills are bad and make the game into 'lmao just do your random plus on block move in neutral' half the time.

Every single new thing sucks. It's a shame, because absolutely everything about the game except the gameplay is excellent. Amazing graphics, music, stages. But the most important thing, the gameplay, sucks.

Maybe they'll do a new 'edition' or something and fix it eventually but I suspect they will be too prideful and instead try to 'fix' these mechanics instead of just removing them and letting it just be a melty blood game.

I agree safejumps are massively more important now due to throws. I disagree that it is acceptable that safejumps are the only reliable means of getting meaties. Her main confirm route (cr.b st.a link cr.c) doesn't work from a jumpin and requires close range. Guess she just doesn't get to confirm outside of cl.d?

I agree with a lot of your post but the 0f throw shit is genuinely terrible and adds nothing to the game. Many major players have been complaining about it and how massively it limits your offense and makes some characters without much setplay awful who would otherwise be fine.
