Auteur games are really easy to elevator pitch to other people (for word of mouth sales), stick out by "going against the grain" (despite easily becoming the grain themselves), and often has an easy translation from ideas-guy bullshit to product, so you got something that can trend easily and generally doesn't have to worry so much about substance or keeping its creative gameplay element fun over several sessions.

But they've been my bread and butter for the past few years, so they definitely at least still get made

They hate games, basically. Games existed. Some people like them, most didn't. People who liked them were hated. Game developers wanted money from haters. They appealed to haters with the non-game elements of games. They succeeded. Haters buy games but hate gameplay and keep pushing developers to make games less game-y.

Mario appeals to literally everyone. If you don't like Mario you probably don't like video games period. In my opinion most platformers in general are impossible to dislike unless they are poorly made like Bubsy 3D

That's not necessarily a good thing. Gameplay pretty much consisted of

Which is incredibly boring. Other JRPGs at least give you customisation outside the battle or in-battle tactical options, while Omori consists of the same strategy over and over again

If you're spamming Aubrey headbutt you're making the enemies Sad, presumably
You're getting 25% less EXP and CLAMS from sad enemies, whereas angry gives you more EXP and Happy gives you more Clams, so you're making the game grindier at the cost of making it easier.

There's also a great mod for the game that rebalances the mechanics

Omori accomplished what it set out to do pretty well, problem is Sweetheart's Castle and Humphrey were filler that dragged down the pacing
