Was it really only a few months? I played FF7 when it first came out and played CC on PSP, but it always seemed ambiguous how much time had passed between Zack's death and Cloud hooking up with Avalanche. Am I forgetting something or did I miss something? I always kind of imagined him just being a homeless dude in the slums with mako poisoning before Tifa ran into him and he started recreating his past in his mind after going full schizo.

He meanders his way into midgar and she finds him collapsed and brain fried at a train station but yeah it doesn't specifically mention how long it has been I believe but I'm guessing not too long considering.

Even though I think Tifa was the cannon winner I don't think that scene was about that. That scene was about Tifa being Cloud's anchor. Clouds biggest issue by the midpoint of the game is realizing that he's been an unreliable narrator this whole time. Sephiroth and Jenova can fuck with his perception of reality. He can never truly know if he's making the right decision because he has several people gaslighting him into believing either skewed or straight up wrong information. But Tifa is always there and they share the same history. And Sephiroth can't fuck with Tifa the way he can fuck with him. So when Tifa tells Cloud that he's not the failure he thought he was, he can believe it. That catharsis would still be there whether they fucked or not.

So Cloud and Zack get mako fucked inside of the mansion which doesn't do much to Zack because he's resistant to it. Cloud however is very susceptible to it for whatever reason, possibly because he was dying after being ran through with a sword by Sephiroth.
Mako-fucked Cloud is then taken back to Midgar with Zack, in the back of a truck while Zack constantly talks to him about his life etc. Cloud then witnesses Zack die after mowing down shinra troops.
Cloud's mind is currently completely broken at this point but then he runs into Tifa and he somehow pieces parts of himself back together but mixes it up with what Zack told him.
So he wanted to be a 1st class Soldier but never made it, he was strong enough but failed the mental part of it or some shit I forget. But because of his broken memories he thinks he is one.
Basically in summary not much time needs to have passed since Zack died, it's just Cloud's memories are completely fucked as you can see throughout the game where he hunches over in pain with his mind trying to work shit out/his jenova cells trying to manipulate him.

Cloud sort of explains it on the Highwind. You have to be both physically and mentally strong to make it past soldiers front door. Cloud was mentally weak and a whole thing about Mako is that it's the most mentally corrosive substance in FF7's world. Being drenched in liquefied souls ruins you unless you're strong enough to maintain your own personality. Zack was always mentally strong the Cloud was not which is why he washed out. And after being drenched in it for 3 years Cloud's brain may as well had been charcoal. Something that ended up happening to him in a worse way after the Northern Crater.

But the only hints that there's something off with him at the beginning of FF7 is when he gets close to to much Mako and starts feeling funny or whatever. He's kind of autistic, but has a completely developed personality and backstory. Yeah, he mixed up all those memories, but he didn't go from full blown mako poisoning to be a functioning schizophrenic dude overnight.

well considering they went from cloud's home all the way to midgar it's not really overnight... except that time doesn't really get explained very clearly as you travel across the game so your guess is as good as mine on that one

Part of the problem is World building things. Looking at the route from Nibelheim to Midgar they have to get around the mountains of Cosmo Canyon, pass through Zack's hometown, cross a desert, charter a boat to get across the ocean, get through Junon undetected, then cross the Mythril mines, and get past the swamp with the giant snake. All while being international fugitives to the company that has literally taken over the entire world. That sort of journey must've taken months even conservatively.

What varies is the circumstances behind how he died. In the original game Zack's death was very blunt. They got caught just outside Midgar's border and several guards gunned Zack down. Really it was pretty bad. He was shot like a dog, the guards sneered and shit talked him as they put a few more in him for good measure, found Cloud but decided he wasn't worth the bullets before sauntering off. Cloud picks up the Buster Sword from Zack's dead body before the scene fades as he looks on Midgar. In CC, Zack solo's an entire battalion, killing all of them before his strength finally gives out. Zack, with his last breath, passes on the Buster Sword along with his dreams before he finally dies wondering if he became a hero.

There's no snark from Zack in the originated. They get caught by surprise, Zack goes to engage but is forced to quickly retreat, and then he's killed. It's kind of fucked knowing what a positive person he was but that was kind of the point. Shinra kills all positivity it comes in contact with. Cloud is only alive because the patrol that found them couldn't be assed to kill him. Cloud just got lucky.

That's because the entire Zack storyline is optional. And the other user's right, they literally catch Zack with his back turned, shoot him, walk up to him, and execute him. It's really quite shocking and cold.

In terms of canon it's might be a little odd that Zack is killed by a randos bullets, considering limit breaks are a real thing in setting and you routinely fight people with guns all the time, but comparing gameplay to story in games is always hard.

In the original Japanese release those scenes don't exist in the game. In the international releases you only see them if you go back to Shinra Mansion in Nibelheim after Cloud gets unfucked

It's kind of the difference between games made now and games made then. Games now are turbo sluts. Artists and teams are paid a whole lot of money to make those pretty sky boxes and high resolution textures and they want you, the player, to look at them. So it's common to see every detail of a modern game on your first playthrough. Older RPGs have details that you probably wouldn't ever see. Knights of the Round is the most powerful attack in the game without getting into Materia combos. There is no indication anywhere that it exists. The only way you would ever find it is if you went through the trouble of breeding a golden Chocobo, itself a very long and arduous process. Since the Highwind can't land on the island that it's on. So it doesn't surprise me that you missed it because the scene itself is totally optional and would require you to go back to an area you have no reason to go back to.
