Is Elden Ring an unabashed masterpiece or are there glaring flaws?

It's a good game that really did not reinvent the wheel and has some flaws. Could have been a lot more if the open world was properly utilized and not just treated as Dark Souls spread thin. There are also reasonable complaints about the combat and balancing. Definitely not their best game imo, probably fourth after BB, Sekiro, and DS1.

It does have some fantastic dungeons though, I will give it that.

One big flaw: It's open world.
Elden Ring isn't made better by its open world, its a game that's still good IN SPITE of its open world.

This game will forever be the point where FROM forever become a normie dev. They were trending that way, but Open World+GRRM+Journalist Mode (summons) have drawn in a huge new crowd that is actually able to complete the game.

I don't hate the open world, I just wish they designed the game around it a bit more instead of it mostly just being visual candy while you progress the best parts of the game, which are the dungeons. Limgrave almost was Kino since it actually had NPCs but it needed a bit more life and the rest of the world is basically dead.

Fromsoft never made a real masterpiece they are a second rate dev that lucked out with DaS (a flawed masterpiece) and are still living on the hype it created. They know it and that's why they are so terrified of deviating too much from the decade old DaS formula, and this is the reason why they will never make a real masterpiece.
