The only racing game I have ever played outside of random ones at the arcade was R4: Ridge Racer Type 4. I loved it and beat every campaign. OutRun 2006 looks good from these webms, so I'll check that out to. Any advice for a first time player?

In Outrun, taking a left turn at a fork in the road chooses the easier level and taking a right turn chooses the harder level. Also, the 2 SP course is overall easier than the 2 course.
Heart Attack mode is the main gimmick of Outrun 2, so don't overlook it.

It is a meh game which is why nobody talks about it. The cars feel floating, the weapons have little in the way of feedback and the vehicle progression is straight car -> car but faster with no meaningful change to how they play.

Aside from that, I liked the fact that there were various cheat codes written on walls all around the maps and you had to use those cheat codes to reach other cheat codes.

I guess it's because it's not remarkable in any way, even though it doesn't really do anything wrong except for the weapons as you mentioned.
For me the physics are the highlight of the game, the cars still feel like cars but you constantly feel like a single mistake will fuck you over due to the handling. The driving also feels a lot smoother than most other racing games from 1998.
