Why do retards always claim the newest entry in a series has a bad story (as if that even matters when their gameplay is better)? They claim this with Persona 5 and SMTV even though Persona 5 has a better story than all previous entries and prior SMT entries were all shit on for their stories when they came out. Until about a year or two ago everyone used to say SMTIV's story was dogshit and now people say it's the best.
People do this with many other games too but Atlus games gets this treatment way more from smooth brains.

Atlus games force me to watch the story. Even skipping it isn’t truly skipping the cutscene, you’re just putting it on fast forward. Because of this I’m forced to see the actions take place. It also doesn’t help that P5 has the characters repeat what happened all the time so even if you completely ignore the cutscenes you still get the story shoved into your face. SMTV got it right by actually making a proper skip cutscene function that jumps to after the cutscene.

It's more of a case of not appreciating what we have until we get something worse. Kinda like with Wind Waker. Honestly, SMTV and P5 really sropped off compared to their direct predecessors.
Sure, SMTIV had its issues, but it still had characters to care for. Meanwhile, P4 is very much a matter of taste. I liked pretty much everything about P5 more, until the "twist" about the casino heist ruined everything for me.
That said, there's of course the typical Yea Forums-tardation where a bunch of autists come together to hate on new stuff, just to rile up the other end of the spectrum.

i'd argue p3 had a better core story about coping with things like death or failure and learning to just enjoy what you got.
that being said most people who talk about persona or SMT don't play smt or persona they just watch some video on it or get the cliff notes off a wikipedia page. This causes a mixture of people not getting a full picture of the 80+ hour long game and it's story within on top of just hating persona/smt now that it's more popular.

The reason this happens to Atlus more often than other companies is because Atlus stories are consistently bad. Nobody can agree which one is better than another because they all flat-out suck. Simple as that.
For example I've played through SMT3 like 3 times and if you told me to give a detailed summary of the story with all of the major story beats I would probably fuck up and forget some important shit and confuse myself halfway through telling it. Like I remember the characters and the bosses and some of the cool story beats like the mannequin town getting slaughtered by chiaki but i cant recall like 60% of the story even with how sparse it is. I would never play that game or any Atlus game for the story, I play it for the interesting demons and the cool worlds and the music and because I like the SMT combat system.
