This is unironically part of why certain western devs are mad at Elden Ring. It was a massive success while not doing any of the shit that the "top" western studios/publishers are pushing hard.
In terms of commercial format:- >gives 100+ hrs content for a lower price than what the big studios charge for 20hrs >no lootboxes >no microtransactions >no mini DLC spam >no form of paywalled content >doesn't push the "live service" format
And then there's the cultural/design aspects that the west believes to be the best forms of game design, which ER didn't follow at all (See: seething HFW devs):- >it's not a heavily story driven Sony game >it's not full of expensive motion captured cutscenes >it doesn't shove in real world cultural/political augments to pander or "make a point" >NPCs don't explain themselves/talk to you like it's your first day in school >it doesn't hold your hand every step of the way, it just gives enough hints and for the most part leaves you alone in a huge world >it puts up challenges straight away that will crush 90% of new players (tree sentinel & troll right by the first open world grace site) to teach lessons in a harsh way
Elden Ring was a commercial success by being a classic VIDEO GAME, and that actually annoys some people.

And yeah, you're obviously right, at least about the second part, it flies in the face of what most of them "know" and have spent years practicing, so it's pretty normal that they would react badly, and some would try and create narratives that mean not dealing with the reality they're facing.

this game makes most reviewers seethe since it doesn't have a baby mode toggle so they can't play. Just come here and shitpost about it that and nintenbabies angry it's miles ahead of BoTW
