yeah i dont get it either. unreal engine 5 just came out. i was wondering what crazy bullshit tech they invented. turns out they didnt invent anything and they just brute force lighting with more cpu power. very lame
After years of collecting data companies have put together their list of "what drives game sales". As it turns out, optimization is pretty low on that list. "Not a 500gb bloated fuckfest" is a positive point for your players, but you can't put that on an advertisement. Easier to just lean on newer hardware and put more dev time into the stuff that actually does sell games.
Publishers don't really care for QA, specifically on PC. Mindset is "Get the product out, worry about patching shit later, if at all."
That and you can't really take into account how many different builds are configured. Consoles are for the most part simpler to deal with, with people having the same specs.
because before they had to do it for the game to work, now it will work anyways, who cares if the game stutters from time to time ? I'm just gonna put that 5 billion tris model in and get my paycheck at the end of the month because it's my job, not my passion.
