It's unbelievable how badly they butchered Liara and Ashley. In ME1 Liara was a cute nerd and Ashley was a tomboyish woman who believes in God, which is at least interesting as it's a novelty in a sci-fi setting. ME2 obviously ruined Ashley (and Kaiden) by making them retards who no longer trust you just because you're working with Cerberus, and it sets Liara up to be an important player as the shadow broker and it does a good job of developing her from her nerdy self to a dangerous and ruthless information broker. Then ME3 roles around and Ashley is now bisexual, devoid of personality and still a retard and Liara is next to useless despite being the fucking shadow broker and has zero personality as well. Seriously, Tali and Jack are the only female romances that I think are worth a damn, and Jack gets shafted in ME3 due to almost all of the ME2 characters being sidelined.
james is a better gung-ho hothead than ashley and a better bro than kaiden with an actual personality, and has better banter with the other squadmates. he should have been there from me1

You can mostly thank the Suicide Mission for that. As soon as any character *can* die in a game, they're useless from that point forward in the narrative as a whole because they'll never be able to affect the game in a serious way

Nah, Kaidan is though and it actually wasn't too bad from what I remember, I didn't go through with it but the proposition actually felt more realistic than the way these games usually do it, which is to get good boy points to unlock your sex cutscene. This magical uturn at least gave the impression of complicated developed feelings over several games, combined with the backdrop of galactic annihilation.

ME2's Liara's street-smart people skills info broker meme directly opposes her ME1 characterization. Trading information isn't looking at terminals. "Information broker" is a fancy way of saying info merchant. Being a merchant above all requires insight into the other person's behavior and attitude, knowing how to best take advantage of them in a bargain, knowing how to back and who to betray, when to threaten, when to charm, knowing what value someone might place on something. You don't even have to be book-smart for this job, you have to be street smart and know how to deal with people. Liara's whole shtick in ME1 was that she focused on science in an impersonal way and that her social expertise was non-existent. Tracking Shepard's body isn't something that would improve her social expertise. Being an information broker is something that requires vast amount of social expertise because it hinges on navigating through ambiguous social exchanges and knowing when your opponent is bullshitting you or trying to oversell/undersell or trying to scam you. Liara not knowing anything about this and then suddenly becoming one of Ilium's finest at this within 2 years in a society where it takes fucking decades to hone your skills is bullshit. It's completely flipping a character without any believable progression. Completely ignoring a character's key trait in order to give them a power level increase or story relevancy is textbook Mary Sue stuff.

Kaidan is fine, same as Vega; people act like every single character should be a super special renegade cop/merc like Garrus or Wrex or Zaeed. A normal dude that's put his problems behind him is needed when every single other character i full of daddy/grandaddy/mommy issues
