Visiting is all adventure and excitement, living and working is mundane and boring.

Living in Japan is fun and while there is a ton of friendly people there, there's still the feeling that you're not really wanted there and it's depressing.

True, but IN Japan everyone is noticing you a lot more which isn't so bad in a big city where they're used to seeing foreigners more. It's more about subtle racism foreigners face like the story of the guy who had a Japanese wife who were rejected to rent an apartment, but when she went by herself they accepted her.

It'd just be kind of annoying when something bad happens and you're left wondering if you could've done anything to help it or not is they're just racist against foreigners.

They do that everywhere in places with a population above village levels.
I live in central Europe and my town isn't even very large, and nobody bothers me EVER.
At most people greet me in a friendly manner and I greet them back.

Why don't more solo/indiedevs just buy a cheap house in a mid-sized white Southern/Appalachian town? There's still cable internet, and cost of living is super cheap. Instead they choose to rent a studio in NYC/SF, pretend that they're "networking", and spend all their time waging with no time/energy for dev on the weekends.
