the dumbest thing that actually scared me in a game was the hidden time limit on dungeon floors in the PMD games. The first time I experienced it I was just grinding on level 1 of some dungeon until the game started warning me something was coming like a man-eating jaguar was loose in my neighborhood or something, I ended up panicking and turning the game off at the last warning. I tried to finish every floor as quickly as possible after that.
Even though I know what it is now the warnings still make me pretty of uncomfortable.
