All of the 2D pokemon games are pretty good I can't really think of one that's objectively bad. It's basically the same fucking game with a bit extra each gen so if you want the "fix" just look at the gen after. Pokemons main thing has been that its core formula is really fun, so they've been getting away with less and less as of recently

The gym leaders have like only 1 pokemon at most that's actually a threat. Their level is basically the only thing that makes them even halfway challenging and your Pokemon will always be stronger anyway.

In GSC it was only tolerable thanks to badge boosts. It was unbearable in HGSS.

Based but even with their improvements it feels like it'll always be in beta. They're slowly chipping away at the 9bit fork to expand the dex without cuts but even then there's so much TODO shit.
Still the best way to replay Crystal just for the base content along with features like natures/abilities/level scaling/phsyspec split.
The second generation of Pokemon improved on the first gen in literally every conceivable way.
eh, I did not care for gen 4 that much. it makes you go to that shitty, winding, zubat infested mountain 3 times in the story, and for what
GSC was shit, I'm not sure why people praise them. This is coming from someone who started on Blue and was big on the Pokemania, to the point where my Dad emulated the Japanese version of Gold for me way before the Western release was out. The anime also got worse when it transitioned to gen 2.

HGSS was not as impactful on its release as G/S were back in the day. That's similar to implying that OOT3D has as much relevance as OOT when it released, they're incomparable.

Here's my legitimate complaints.

I'd still rather play it than Gen 1, but they're hardly perfect. Later games just have a better mix of old and new and more balanced levels.
Pokemon fans in general are fucking awful to deal with, they can't divorce their nostalgia for whatever games they started with from the game's actual quality when it comes to discussion
No other game fandom is anywhere near THIS fucking bad when it comes to their games in my experience.
I mostly agree with all of this, HGSS sort of touched upon some of the flaws but kantos trainers being such a joke makes it less interesting than it otherwise could've been
I've never played a pokemon romhack but I'm sure theres a decent one out there that address some of these things for HGSS, should probably look into that at some point
The most confusing part to me is that most players will go to Chuck then Jasmine after Morty. Jasmine has 2 level 30s and a level 35, then you go to Pryce and he has a level 27, a 29 and 31. They tried to make it more open worldy because you could go to Pryce to first, but pretty much everyone I know always went after Jasmine then Pryce.
Also there weren't many gen 2 Pokemon to catch in Jhoto, a lot of gen 1 though. And gen 2 Pokemon aren't that great, some are just evolutions to gen 1 Pokemon, some are baby Pokemon and a decent portion only became decent after getting a gen 4 evolution later on.
Of course they can be fixed.

I think the intent was the new mons were rarer because they were newly discovered. It sort of makes sense if you look at Johto as an expansion rather than a sequel. But it doesn't make it much better.
