You have a button that lets you trigger Trance manually, for some reason people forget about that. On the bottom left, you can see 3 wisps & a skull, indicating how much Trance you have: The blue & grey spirits you pick up increase the gauge, and you can pop Trance only when it's full.

Because in Trance Mode, the Green & Purple spirits, that act as Life & Bomb pieces, are worth double their amount. This is pretty essential to getting ressources, which even with that in mind aren't exactly plentiful in TD. To make up for it, TD arguably has the easiest patterns in the series, and so you should adapt your mindset to it: This is not at all like MoF or PCB Sakuya where you have so many bombs & lives that you don't get punished that harshly for panic bombing. You value your ressources a bit more, but to compensate the game's patterns are easier, though you can still afford it to an extent, just don't overdo it and panic at the slightest bit of density.
Also given your OP pick i'll go with the assumption that you are playing Sanae: Don't. Unlike in literally all her other appearances, she's actually not broken, quite the contrary, she's a little underwhelming. Nothing too bad but not great especially in the hands of a beginner. I'd recommend Reimu or Youmu. There are only a few instances of the game forcing ou to bottom hug hard in TD to the point where Youmu's slashes wouldn't hit, so she does really well. Stage layout also works in such a way that Youmu's width on her slashes kills a lot before it even does much. She also has the added bonus of her slashes essentially being as if you were using a piercing shot which is really good against Seiga, who sometimes hides under Yoshika. It's like a less broken instance of what happens with Reisen against Sagume in LoLK.

Just use Trance, try no not use anything until 4th stage thats when you use bombs in every spell, the 5th stage is easy just see a video and 6th bomb as well
