Right now they are actually rereleasing those 90s models. They are all over target and Amazon

Some versions in the mid 2000s had antennas

These days they sell modern ones that have backlit color screens, reruns of the original 90s version, and "nanos" which are tiny and mostly a vessel for IP crossovers. eg a Kingdom Hearts one was just announced, they've also done demon slayer and evangelion and a lot more

What a coincidence, I am currently working on that ! Currently on the tilemapping phase!

Here's the thing. You'd have to find yourself a soldering pen, a TFT screen (~10 to 20$), an MCU (ESP32 at ~6 to 9$), few buttons , a switch, few buttons + electronics supply(resistors, LED, wiring, PCB)
Around 20 to 40$ bux depending on the screen size (main factors). Otherwise, it's pretty easy.

Software is where the bulk of the work is. Not the actual tamagotchi software, that's trivial. It's the firmware and how it react to your components you'd need to wise up a little - so you do not have everything crawling to a crawl ( despite using a 32 bits 240mhz 2 core system mind you) or having a battery explode on you!
There are guide online or Githubs for most component.

Now I do not have set up a github yet for it , but I do plan to create an open source Vpet - with installation guides , circuit schematics , modding support, multiplayer (bluetooth\LAN), software to helps vpet creation with custom scenes/actions mechanics and schematics for PCB and board printing.

Or you could also get sent one of such model for a modest prices with 3D printing casing. :^).

Basically it's the standard formula, but with cross breading mechanics so each Tama is different

They can’t if they just keep using the tiny lcd screens, sonic adventure 2 is the best virtual pet experience and it hasn’t been topped in 2 decades, probably never will.
