I find it incredibly boring and true power fantasy when you're the likes of original doom guy running around with a t-shirt slaughtering demons and getting hit by bullets and demonic energies and shrugging them off whereas it would make sense if you're a fully armored guy getting hit because at least you can pass it off as "it damaged his armor and maybe the rupture damage caused some deep skin scars but he's okay". Worse if your character and allies aren't even wearing fully enclosed headgear or nothing at all because they are the special protags.
The only game I enjoy where you face impossible odds and don't wear a helmet is Gears of War. They are still wearing fuck heavy armor and are muscular tanks, and just come across as hardass veterans who know how to stay in cover because the game itself is so cover based that sprinting itself forces the characters to keep their heads down and their bodies as low as possible.
