Dante was cool in Devil May Cry 1 in a somber adult way and in Devil Mary Cry 3 he was way more energetic and juvenile because he was not only younger, but also more innocent.
But then they took that young teenage attitude and plastered it on an adult body in DMC4 and basically turned Dante into a manchild, making it so that his personality hasn't changed one bit since DMC3.
The contrast between DMC1 and DMC3 implied that he grew up. 4 and 5 just seem to retcon it.

Not even just implied, but it's straight up the point of the ending of 3. Dante goes in not taking anything seriously and just nihilistically throwing himself at death because he really doesn't give a shit about himself or the world. He's more demon than man, in his mind. But by the end, when he sees what's actually on the line and realizes this isn't just another play fight with Vergil and this might actually be where one of them dies, he stops cracking jokes and is legit trying to save his brother.

Then Vergil rejects his help, he learns that "even a devil may cry when he loses a loved one," and gets his shit together and becomes the Dante from 1, who's still cocky but also takes things seriously. And that's pretty fucking important given he's on Mallet Island to avenge his entire family, including Vergil as it turns out.

The only excuse I can really give for how he acts in 4 is he's gone so god mode that he knows he could end Sanctus at any moment but wants to give Nero a chance to shine, because that's basically what Capcom is doing too.

God of War video for example, it's not bad because it's cinematic, it's bad because it's as deep as a puddle and wastes your time with pointless filler and fails to properly integrate the gameplay with the story. I'm not a fan of TLOU2 for example but it doesn't make the same mistakes as GoW does yet main criticism for the game from its detractors is that it's "cinematic" with no real argument behind it. It's bad yet many people do it, just paraphrasing matthew and generalizing his criticism as cinematic=bad and applying it to every single game. I really hate cinematic games but a game just being cinematic is not real criticism, it's just stating a preference for a certain type of game.

You ultimately play to trivialize everything like other DMC games but with less options and a gayer meta because of bloated enemy life pools and only a few ways to rip through them on DMD.
