you know the magicka resistance does not apply to fire, ice or shock damage, right? very few enemies actually have magicka damage spells

It applies to non-damaging spells, though. Or at least it does in Oblivion. I made a Breton warrior one time as a joke in Oblivion and he was one of the most powerful characters I had ever made, just because he resisted half of all spell effects.

You're backwards. Oblivion's Magic Resistance applies to all damage which comes from magical sources, including elemental. Morrowind's Magic resistance applies to all untyped magical effects such as stat damage, blindness, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's still really strong, but Altmer are still the better choice for actual mages.
